I love swype, but cant stand jumping through all the hoops to stay in the beta group. What are the best alternatives out there?

Depends on who you ask. Have you checked the existing threads on keyboard apps? I'm currently using Swype but trying out 8pen which has quite a learning curve but seems very accurate. You might want to qualify exactly what you mean by "best". Are you looking for easiest learning curve? Are you looking for certain features such as autocomplete, suggestions, autocorrection, multitouch etc?

I saw the video and went ahead and purchased it. From a quick trial with it, entering numbers is not an accurate task. I am sure more practice will help out. By tomorrow evening I will have a comment to make.

so its basically T20 instead of T9 on the old dumphones. that sounds fairly fantastic. Will wait for an independent review to decide.

Shapewriter is the best in my opinion. Its much more accurate than Swype.

Ultra Keyboard. It has a "swype-like" option you can use to slide your finger from letter to letter. Very similar.

F swype. They won't even sell their app; how useless.

+1 more - the 10mb installed size for swype put me right off.

That said, I'm hoping for good things with the Gingerbread keyboard revisions..

I'm sure he's talking about that every couple of months it stops working requiring you to uninstall and reinstall the latest version. They're beta upgrade process is ridiculous.

Personally for me, right now, I've been in the beta program for months, my log-in isn't working, their password retrieval isn't working, and it's just a pain in the ass because they self-destruct old versions. I found this threat trying to find an alternative to Swype on Android that provides similar functionality but without having to be in one of the most obnoxious beta programs.
