 I'm just wondering about syncing -

first, it says in the quickstart manual how to mount the storage card onto the PC, but how do you "unmount" it?

secondly, do i need any software in order to accomplish syncing onto my pc -- reason i ask is because of this download i found on the htc.com website --> HTC Mobile Phone Support - DROID ERIS by HTC (Verizon) - Downloads
what exactly does that do? i know it says sync update but is it referring to updating an application on your pc? i don't understand what this update is.

    Thanks for any information!

When you plug your Eris into your computer and "mount" the SD card to your computer, you should get the little notification on the phone as well as in the task bar of your computer. To unmount, click on the task bar icon and choose "Safely Remove Hardware">choose the USB Storage Device>press Stop
Next on the notifications bar>Turn off USB storage.

If you click on the "more" link at the end of the brief description of the link you provided, you will see it goes on your computer and also what the application does. It is way too long to list here.

I currently use double twist to upload my music into my phone. It's pretty nice, it pulls all of your music and playlists from iTunes and allows to choose what to upload. I drag and drop the rest of my media.

What is the HTC Sync software exactly used for?

That is the PC application. Whether or not you use it depends on what you want to do. "Update" just means a newer release of the PC app is available.

It works in conjunction with pre-installed software on your Eris to allow synchronization of address book and calendar data between your PC and your phone - nothing else. It appears to be for use with Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, Windows Address Book (Outlook Express), and Lotus Organizer.

In particular, this means that it is not a backup utility - it won't save your text messages, email on your phone, music or anything else on the SD card, Sense UI scene customizations, call logs, downloaded applications, preferences settings, etc.

(On the PC) it installs a USB "driver" which sits and waits for you to plug in your phone by USB... at that point you can start the process of syncing from the handset in two ways: pull down the Notifications Area and click on "HTC Sync", or else Settings... Data Synchronization...PC.

I downloaded it and started it up - but then figured out that I have no use for it because I use Gmail (which is auto-synced to the phone, and all of it's contacts can be accessed/managed via the cloud).

Well basically all im looking to do is backup my contact list (people list) onto my computer. It sounds like this htc sync app isnt what i want. Anyone know how to do this?

"address book" is the same thing as "contact list".

On a vanilla Windows Xp system, the Windows Address Book is the same thing as the Outlook Express address book. On Vista or W7, i don't have any idea whether Outlook Express is shipped any longer. OE should have some "export" features, so you might be able to get the contact list out of it, even if you are not using it as your (default Windows) mail program.

Give it a shot - it's free, and you have very little to lose by trying.

Is there a way to move my "people" aka "address book" aka "contact list" to my PC? I have a blackberry tour and I am able to backup my contact list to the PC without using Outlook or anything else (because I do not use those programs). I'm just wondering if there is a way to backup the contacts.

Does HTC Sync (found on HTC's website do this? i think it does not from a previous post), or what about on the phone if you go to setup >> data sychronizattion >> Exchange Activesync? What does that do?

I also noticed something when your in the "people" thing, there's an option for sync exchange contacts.. what is this?

For some reason none of my contacts/"people" are synced into my google account on my PC, is this abnormal and how can i fix this if it is? (I chose "phone" when I created each contact)

Sorry for all the questions, I just get paranoid that i'l lose my phone and lose all my contacts. Thanks for anyone willing to help me out here.
