Does anyone know of a Telnet server application for Windows XP Home that doesn't cost $100?

If you're missing any TCP/IP service from the UNIX age, the best source for a good, stable, secure* and free replacement is Cygwin. This suite of POSIX compliant applications running under the Win32 API (via the cygwin1.dll library) provides you with everything that you need to get set up. You'll need to be familiar with the UNIX paradigm, or be able to RTFM precisely.

Chances are that you can find a FOSS Telnet server that's based on Cygwin, with a nice 'n' simple installer if you look hard enough.

*Telnet isn't secure by today's standards, but at least you'll get the latest patches.

I'm going to hope my DH understands what you just said, because I don't think I did. :)

Fortunately, he reads this forum too, so he'll no doubt see this.

Knowledge is power. :) Getting someone to do it for you is a pretty good deal too! ;)

If you can, I'd try to replace your telnet needs with SSH. I'm pretty sure I used a windows executable for ssh (daemon) in one of my classes last year. I forget what it was called. Seriously though, unix and cygwin will make it super easy. And you'll get all the cool linux commands at your disposal. >:D

    :)

I'll run that past DH, since he's the one that really wants that capacity. The XP desktop is mostly mine (although my Vista laptop is my primary computer), but he's got some software on the Win2K desktop he wants to be able to run from his Mac, and I'm not nuts about having that many desktops cluttering up desk areas, so we hope he can consolidate the two Windows desktops and be able to use telnet or some such with them.
