Hi all I'm on three network . had a new sg5 . Got blocked for over using my tether .so off I go to find a VPN thinking that I would have no problem ... But nothing worked . all I could figure was three were recipients of data directly from my handset .
All I could do was call them and to my surprise the operator literally confirmed this I was shocked . is this legal ???!!!!!

It's most likely part of your contract with three. Are you asking if it's legal to block you for tethering? I would suspect 3 has a separate plan for that to which you didn't subscribe and your contract probably states that if you try and circumvent it, then they can block you. That's between you and them ... after all, you signed it.

Or, are you asking if it's legal that they monitor your data usage? Again, their network, their rules. I doubt very much they inspected the data packets and snooped into the content. We've got the government for that. ;)

Yeah Lol. I wasn't blocked completely just at the tether limit .
I was fully aware about the new tether limit with my new contract And I thought for sure there would be some sort of work around .
When I spoke to the operator I was completely honest with him about trying to work around this and I said all I can think is three are not packet sniffing but rather receiving information directly from the built in data usage app he singers and says hold on a min ....
Next thing I know I'm speaking to a supervisor and I'm the most valued customer on the planet lol.
He proceeds to put me back on the one plan with unlimited tether and according to him the one plan is fazed out . crazy

And that is the best way to handle it. :thumb: Honesty is truly the best policy. :D

I am frequently flabbergasted by people who come here to rant and rave about the big evil corporation for having the nerve to enforce contract stipulations and yet, they never once contacted them to ask about options. I've always had a positive experience with calling a company and asking in an honest and reasonable manner how I can get what I want. Almost universally they've been helpful  (What's this world coming to?)

All except doctors ... when they tell you to "turn your head and cough" all they are doing is reaching into your wallet. ;)

Hahahah . I Am concerned about privacy issues thought . and I really don't want to root yet . every mobile device I've had and rooted has died from tablets to mobiles .
I'm completely happy on the one plan . but this honestly raised my eye brows as to what other information could they or anyone be sneaking ..
God it just feels like you can not trust anyone from politicians and bankers to IP s and GPs Lol.

Most networks use deep packet inspection to determine how data is being used. The packet headers tell them what type of device is using the bandwidth.

Or users tying to end-run around their contract T&C. ;)

    Wouldn't a VPN circumvent this ?

All a VPN does is set up an encrypted tunnel between two nodes of a network, it's not a magic wand of anonymity. When you own the wires and switches, you can watch who's coming and going all day long.
