If you are on a custom rom(or more specificaly Das BAMF) will you be able to use the built-in tethering feature free when the trial period runs out or will it still be blocked by verizon unless you pay for it?

You will still be able to use it, however you will be charged for it. No one has successfully cracked the Hot Spot app yet. Just download "Wireless Tether for Root Users" and use that

Supposedly some users have said they've done speed tests while tethering and the speeds are higher (indicating 4G), but I'm skeptical

YES.. it will tether in 4G with both voice and data working at the same time. As a matter of fact, had a relatives Iphone 4 connected to my TBolt running BAMF ReMix 1.5 with new radio via wireless tether as well as with the built in mobile hotspot.

Amazingly wireless tether had slightly faster speeds download and upload than the 4G mobile hotspot when tested with the Speet Test App.

if using wireless tether will verizon be able to "see" that you are using it and charge you for doing so?

I just looked for wireless tether in the marketplace and it says "This carrier does not allow," should i download the .apk and install it this way? Which do you prefer Barnacle or Wireless? I have read problems that both have, what are the pros/cons of each?

I've used both of the tether apps and have never been charged. I've tethered for the last couple years. My data usage on average is between 20-35 gb per month.

    I tethered my wife's iPad2 to my TB & got 4G speeds, about 11mbps down & 5mbps up.

There was an article about this on droid-life earlier, check it out. Looks like the carriers are starting to block installation of tethering apps

They're blocking tethering apps on the Android marketplace.

Nothing to stop you from downloading it elsewhere and installing it.
