Text message entry character count?

Am I missing something or is there not a character counter for when you are composing text messages on the standard Desire text message app?

If there isn't one - is there a recommended alternative solution?

There's one there but it doesn't appear until you only have 10 characters left from the first message. It's just above the send button.

Mine doesnt let you know how many characters you have left until you get to 10 characters left. At this point a small "10/1" appears in the top right of the screen (if your in landscape) or just above the 'Send' button (if in portrait).

Once those ten characters have been used it goes to '145/2' and counts down from there.
