Ensure your APN settings are correct for your phone and its service...

Surely that only matters for MMS? SMS don't use a data connection (or not on any network based on the GSM standards, i.e. almost all networks worldwide - I don't know about CDMA).

Hopefully the OP fixed their problem by now though
