Moto g3 ungraded to Marshmallow a while ago and performs well, but the system was getting a bit 'untidy'
I decided to clean it all up with a factory reset.
All seemed to go well, but I opened the standard Android Text app today and all my previous texts have gone?
I am sure when I have done this before all messages have been reinstated? All contacts are back.
I have the 'restore data' box ticked.
Have they gone forever or is there a chance of recovery!

I never rely on the Google backup, but if this Google page is describing the thing you are using then texts are not on the list of items backed up (the messages are not part of the message app's data, but a system database). Contacts are synced separately with your GMail account.

So, obvious question: did you use any other message backup app previously? There are apps that can be used to automatically back up your messages to the cloud (e.g. SMS Backup+ saves them to a separate folder in your Gmail, and can sync them back on request), so is there a chance you had used on of these? If so then reinstalling the app should let you restore them.

Thanks Hadron, I think I was confused and was thinking of transferring data from an old phone to a new.
I don't have any SMS backup software installed (unfortunately) so I shall consider them gone.
Thank you for clarifying the fact that messages are not backed up by default!
