Maybe he can't afford the ebay cut or something. Let's shed a single collective tear.

I know, right? Android phones--even the high-end, latest-and-greatest--are way cheaper than iPhones; the iPhone 3GS still sells unlocked for more than the Nexus One in most parts of the world! (Or the Desire/Milestone, for that matter. The Galaxy S may just be more expensive than it, but the Galaxy S is also much more powerful and hot off the press compared to a one-year-old 3GS.)

Oh? I didn't know smartphones were a necessity instead of, hmmm... a luxury. Yeah sorry you need to shell out money/save up for one, we know it should be a god-given right just like the ability to vote.

Anyone got a "world's smallest violin" gif?

This is wrong. As a former winmo owner, the office integration on legacy winmo is second to none. Now will winmo7 follow suit? I hope so... as that's the only trump card they have, along with maybe outlook.

This is a good post. The iphone is a fine product, but I also believe the Android to be a fine product as well... I love mine. However, what one person likes, and what another person likes may differ quite a bit. The best way to find that out is through using them. I have had my ipod touch a little longer than I have had my Android, so having used both products I can say I prefer the Android and will be sticking with it, but to rag on someone else for their opinions/preference is pretty silly if you ask me.

Maybe it got better but the problem with mobile office was that if you edit the doc you would lose the advanced formatting while doc2go kept it intact. These office alternatives were able to do better in the WinMo world than Office alternatives for the PC (such as the once mighty Wordperfect).
IE is an even bigger loser as it was replaced with Opera on HTC phones and it's not going to happen on Blackberry, IE and Android.

Do you shop at RIPOFF'R'US or something? The N1 is $530. That's about 353 GBP.

Even after taxes, it can't be much more than, what, 420 GBP? That's for a five-month-old phone that continues to hold its own (and gets fantastic performance optimization too, thanks to the 2.2 OTA that just started rolling out) compared to a one-year-old, outdated piece of shit. Five months ago, on the very dawn of its release, the N1 was also $530 (I was astonished at how very cheap it was for a latest-and-greatest piece of kit) compared to about $740 for an unlocked 3GS 32GB. Android users have never been an "elitist club," son. Barking way up the wrong tree.

And as everyone's pointed out, you could've sold your Hero, thrown in a bit of spare change and get yourself your precious, precious iPhone. If you're allergic to anything non-Apple, it was your fault in the first place for settling with the very thing that gave you rashes.

I do think it's worth taking into consideration the fact that the iPhone has 16/32GB of internal memory, compared to the Nexus One's 512MB(with a 4GB Micro-SD).

    Guys, please read this:

    Hi, mjschmidt here (the OP).

Just want to clarify, or at least remind everyone that, as much as I enjoy hearing people debate the merits of both phones, my original post was not about how one phone is better than the other, but it seems this thread has been hijacked to go in that direction anyway.

There are merits to both phones, but I prefer Android.

My original post is not about the iPhone, but about iPhone fanboys. It is my thesis statement that mindless fanboyism (new word!) is detrimental to the advancement of Android, not necessarily because iPhone is better than Android (which is not the argument) but because the marketing/PR/brainwashing that surrounds the iPhone causes people to reject even the notion of trying Android.

My anecdote was about 1. an iPhone fanboy spewing the usual marketing drivel as a justification for refusing to even look at Android; and 2. A bystander with NO phone saying that he should get an iPhone "because it easier to use", this being an example of how the Fanboyism is affecting the proper decision-making tree for consideration of one over the other.

If a potential consumer looks at the list of factual features and differences between the phones, and chooses the iPhone because of the facts then there is nothing wrong with it. In the end, these phones do so much the same that the real differences between them make the choice one of personal preference.

If a potential customer chooses an iPhone because they've bought into the Marketing slogans, such that they believe things that aren't necessarily true and without being even willing to consider the alternatives (and the factual comparison between them) then that is what causes me the most aggravation.

I am not debating the differences between iPhone and Android, I am arguing that it is counterproductive (and illogical) to choose any gadget because of "hype" then because of a full examination of the actual features in a comparative manner.

I started this thread with a COMPLETELY different discussion in mind. Can we please at least consider having that discussion instead of rehashing the same old pi$$ing contest?

Non-issue. Froyo enables apps2sd, there're many app devs who are already taking advantage of this. In addition, games that require some 100-150MB of additional data generally save that data to the sdcard.

Plus, even if you buy say a 16GB card, the difference added up still won't be anywhere near the difference in price between the 3GS and an N1, and that's not taking into account the N1's superior processor, RAM, camera, etc.

If you wanted fanboyism, I think there's plenty on display, but it's Android fanboyism...

...no, maybe that's unfair, I can't say that it's definitely fanboyism, it does have an edge of Apple hatred to it, maybe they just mindlessly hate enough to seem like fanboys of an alternative??

I don't disagree that the phone debate can bring out the "fanboyism", the difference seems, however, to be that most Apple "fan boys" (who are the "technical" sort ie. the common person) argue using marketing rather than factual information about the phone, whereas Android fanboys tend to argue the merits of the phones, not the marketing.

This may be, I suppose, because the majority of Android users might more of the "technical" persuasion than the average common iPhone user?

Funniest thing about this thread is the fact that because iPhone is being mentioned so often (oops done it again) that the Google ads at the top of the page are now targeting iPhone products on an Android forum :D lol

Actually, depending on a few variables, including choice of browser, os, etc, the ads are based on your browsing history using stored "tracking cookies" on your local machine. For instance, on my friends computer, the ads that actually show up are car related and have no relevance to android or phones at all =].

I'm using IE8 and mine will be phone related as I've been doing a lot of phone related searches just prior to taking up my Desire contract lol. However at no point (again not bashing it) did I look at the iPhoneor related material apart from the odd comparison youtube vid such as those done by PocketNow.com.

First off saying one phone is better than another is like saying Ford is better than Chevy. It's all personal preference.

Second. To the idiot that says the iPhone is for people that don't understand computers, has no idea. I use a Mac for my everyday use, I use a pc for special products, like my touch screen jukebox or my 3 sided cocktail table that I built I use unRaid for my server. Which is based on Linux.

Third. For the person that say he wants to get into this so he can deconstruct the iPhone arguments I can do the same thing on android.

Again prove to me why one phone is better than another. You can't. Specs me nothing. Android and the iPhone all do pretty much the same thing just different ways to do them. Tell me what phone is better if all I want to do is surf the web, check email and play a game or two?

Tell me what is better if all I want to do is make phone calls?

Tell me what is better if I want to check my work email, personal email and surf the web.

It all depends on what you like
Ifyou don't understand this than you are immature.
  18. grainysand

    grainysand Android Expert

The 3G/3GS are known for dropping calls.

The iPhone 4 drops calls if you hold it by the bottom-left corner.

So I'm going to sit right here and lol at you.
  19. IOWA

    IOWA Mr. Logic Pants

Well I guess the marketing guru's at Apple are all idiots then, because that's one of their key selling points. Sucks when marketing jargon "logic" backfires, doesn't it?

Whats best for the internet? Well since OSX STILL doens't render a sizeable portion of the web correctly, (tables, some css, and Flash), so what makes you think the stripped down version of OSX that is aka iOs which will never support flash(as of now) can do any better than the piss-poor job OSX does? Granted OSX is getting better but there are still some layout issues, and massive flash incompatibilities on intensive flash applications.

Whats better if you just want phone calls? A jitterbug.

Email and web? Android generally, unless your using Cisco VPN, which is being worked on. But all ten of my IMAP inbox's sync beautifully on Android.

Just ran my eye over Apple's main iPhone page, couldn't find anywhere they were selling the iPhone as 'for people who don't understand computers'.

Could you point out where this 'key' selling point is made?

Just because something's made to be easy to use, doesn't mean it's not aimed at people who understand it, just that it's designed to be used easily.

It really does seem like you enjoy looking down on people you consider less able than yourself, and if somebody chooses the easy option, you assume they're not up to doing it the hard way, and are therefore fair game for your bile filled attacks.
  21. IOWA

    IOWA Mr. Logic Pants

Saying something along the lines of "Hey it's so easy!" is about the same "For those who don't understand computers" in this topic, as computers and technology in general can be very intimidating to some people, so saying it's so easy a caveman can do it, (ok thats geico, but still lol), well, who do you think Apple is trying to target here? Learn to |R|E|A|D|

And my "bile filled attacks"? What? Your the one dropping the Fbomb every other post and cussing people out when they prove you wrong. When someone resorts to profanity in a calm and civil discussion, well, they must know they've been bested.

    Hypocrites annoy me.
  22. mpw

    mpw Android Expert

Nope, I disagree; I think that saying something is easy to use says it's easy to use. Of course that does mean it's easy to use for everybody, not that it's aimed at a specific market.

Look at a gas hob, designed to be easy to use, so they put a button on the front to ignite the gas; has been designed to be easy, or for those that don't understand matches?

Not much wrong with my reading IOWA, you're the one who so often reads what is not there, then attacks the writer for what they haven't said.

Sorry? I've been proven wrong? Where?

Swearing has got nothing to do with a lack of vocabulary, and is no sign that I'm losing any argument, maybe it's a sign that I'm losing my patience with people who lie, people who are nasty and attacking, people who are closed minded, but NOT that those liars, scum and bigots have proven their argument.

I don't doubt they do, you are a hypocrite, are I find you to be quite an irritant.
  23. IOWA

    IOWA Mr. Logic Pants

I've proven my arguments time and time again, and please point out some of these imaginary lie's your referring to. I think your a bitter old person with nothing better to do. And when did someone mention vocabulary? Where did that come from?

And hey, if you can't see Apple's intent here with the ease of use thing, well, that's your problem.

And are you said people hopped in on the deconstruction of your straw house? I mean, if you loved iPhone so much, it's already been proven you can get one quite easily, and at a price point similar to what you paid for your here. If you really can't afford it, then you should be finding a way to make more money instead of arguing with me about money you don't have, and falsely calling people liars, scum, and bigots. I'm sure some rich people see poor/middle class people as "scum" as well. How does that make you feel?

But lets have a look here. Can you please point out one, JUST ONE post, that you have actually contributed some good to this forum?

EDIT: And since I've been given a "vacation" for arguing in threads, I'm going to go ahead and take the high road here, and stop in this thread, about this particular subject, with you. Feel free to take this "debate" into PM if you wish to continue.

And you call our posts "bile-filled attacks"? Wow.
  25. mpw

    mpw Android Expert

IOWA, I have no problem with your choice to use Android, or anybody else's choice to use iOS, Android, Nokia etc. etc. I don't attack you for your choices, so why attack me for mine? why talk down to people because of their choices?

You have lied in these forums, you are a hypocrite, and IMO you're a nasty example of the worst kind of 'fanboy', because while you may have a preference you wish to extol about, in this case Android, I think you actually enjoy attacking people for their 'bad' choices too. And add to that the fact that your arguments are often just terribly constructed to attack, not counter or answer.

I don't care what you have to say in private, and your choices are your own to make' what I take exception to is your attitude, and how you've gone out of your way to attack me in public. I'd hope people see through you as plainly as I do, but I won't not defend myself.
