An hour ago I was at work trying out a Sprint technical salesperson's EVO phone. I dare say it was the highlight of my day. I was so in awe of the phone that I didn't even think to ask when the 2.1 update for the Moment would come out.

I really like my Moment, but if I could get an EVO I am pretty sure I would ditch my old phone in a heartbeat. He walked me through a few things in the EVO, but again I was too surprised to think of any good questions.

    Some thoughts on the EVO:

    • Great dimensions to the phone. Thin and not heavy. I'd rate it as one of the best looking phones out there.
    • The screen seems huge. HUGE! Even if it truthfully isn't all that much bigger than the Moment. I watch videos on my phone a lot as it is my only impetus to go to the gym. The EVO would be good for my health. :)
    • The tech guy said he gets a solid day of battery life. That may not sound like a lot, but hey, he works for Sprint and probably uses the phone constantly.
    • Multitouch appeared to work
    • In the camera app it did facial recognition
    • He mentioned that this was an early ROM and he has updates. Even though the performance of the phone was great I would expect even more on the final version.
I've got no info on wimax or any other interesting features. I wish I had thought to ask about all that, but we were discussing other things...

Well ... I'll need to know how much it will cost before deciding.

Engadget actually printed a retraction on that earlier, so watch out for false info...

As of now, Sprint only has plans to charge for the wifi hotspot - not for 4G data. Also, don't forget that the EVO will have company - the N1, Moment 2 and a few other powerhouses are due out this summer - maybe even the 4G Pre??? No rumor starting here, but it isn't exactly a published thing yet.

Also, there's no 'technical' information on how well the CDMA/WiMAX handoff will work just yet. So we will see how it all works out or if there's something better coming even sooner. The EVO isn't in beta to techs yet, so if this is true, someones gonna get fired! lol

Plus - mod help me out here - shouldn't this be in the EVO section, not the Moment?

As much as I love my qwerty slider... The Speech to Text feature is downright amazing. It is very, very accurate. I think I might actually be able to get by without a keyboard if the improvements keep going at the rate they are....

Me too; really don't care how much it cost.. I bought the Mogul, PPC, TP2 all when they came out along with some other high ones... So this one can't be no more than those were...

Those who have money to blow will own it at release.

The rest of us will grab it in November and enjoy an updated, less expensive product.

Best feature: It's not a Samsung phone.

And I agree, which again, is why I'm ditching it now. Still waiting on my Hero.... still lurking around here making pointless posts... same as always. Lol.

I'm getting the EVO even though I already have the Moment 2.1 FTW! The only reason I like the moment so much is because of the keyboard. I love the new specs and I have an upgrade waiting and some money from taxes set aside!

Meh, I'm willing to deal with some lag over not being able to use my phone at random times through the day. Rooting it can fix some of the issues it has, though some things I'll miss about the Moment... the screen and keyboard mainstay....

I'm curious about this statement since, I would assume, most Moment users got it because they wanted a physical keyboard.

True, but that's because most of us had the iphone/ipod touch to see what a virtual keyboard was about. With the Moment and the Hero, you get to play with a bigger, better virtual keyboard. And the Evo is going to have a HUGE screen, with more room for keys and less chances for fat fingers to mis-type. That's why a lot of us are okay with the idea of losing a physical keyboard.

But also, I have noticed I don't do a whole hell of a lot of typing, so the keyboard has been a little unnecessary.

I did, but with how big the Evo's screen is I'll take that as a trade off. :D

That's an interesting comment. I used to think the same way until I did take my moment back to get a Hero. I would absolutely not consider it a downgrade at all. The faster processor on the Moment is older and at best is only slightly faster than that of the Hero. Not to mention much less efficient. The screen is bright and pretty, but less responsive and totally washed out in bright day light. Living in Arizona, this was a huge problem for me. The keyboard was nice, but the oreo effect wasn't. Sense UI is great, whereas using the home replacements was ok, but not nearly as good.

Not to mention when you factor in all the issues like sd card not being recognized, data lock, sluggish performance unless using setcpu, really horrible battery life, and the heat created by the processor I really can't believe anyone could see the Hero as a downgrade. I had to reboot at least 10 times a day with the moment but never reboot my Hero. I had to root the moment right away to remove all the sprint apps because the OS was just so sluggish, but with the Hero I only rooted when I decided to try out the new 2.1 ROM. The phone just worked perfect from day 1. Never slow or sluggish and even with heavy use 9 hours of battery time on 1.5 was easy to attain whereas on the moment just moderate use would have me recharging at 4 hours.

Sounds to me like you just had a lemon. Did you do the cl14 update? I rarely got any lockups, and haven't had one since 2.1 I had none of those isseus you described.

I will not be getting the EVO nor is it even a consideration so "everyone" isn't switching. I'm happy with my moment.
