i was in the middle of the 12.04 ubuntu upgrade today (comming from 11.10) when my computer crashed. i restarted in a live usb to backup my files to do a format and fresh install of 12.04. the problem is i backed up everything that i want but one folder i cant copy over because i dont have permission to read it. how do i get permission so that i can copy it and back it up?

Okay, so are you root when doing this. If not, that'll fix it right up for you.

The live disc may or may not tell you the passwords... often I find myself logged in as 'live user'

    try a sudo su

or backtrack, that has you log right in as root. I'm sure many others do as well, but that is one that I *know* has root build right in.
