What should I plug in it?
Your elbow..... ?? (The only thing you should ever stick in your ear is your elbow. Old saying)
It's a USB port, so you plug a cable into it. The other end goes into the charger, or your computer
I believe you need to finish your question to get a good answer, though
Dont think this is what you're referring to...
But my dog chewed up my PS3 USB controller cable/charger.
My eris cable works great for charging my PS3 controller
Probably MANY things you can plug that cable into....
I believe the cable is actually referred to as a USB device cable; not to be confused with a USB printer cable.
A round peg into a square hole....
The port: What plugs into it?
Maybe because it's late, almost finals week, or my lack of sleep, but I'm confused.
So no other devices can be accessed through the mini-USB port? Only charging and syncing?
You are gonna have to be more specific about what you are trying to ask. Many devices use mini-usb. Several other phone makers use mini-usb, as mentioned above, PS3 controllers use mini-usb. Many cameras, bluetooth devices, voice recorders, etc use mini-usb.
What other devices, tools, items, connect to the Eris through the mini-USB?
Or a specific one is here in detail.
This plugs into it. Android supports USB hosting, at the very least for devices that work with Linux (EXTERNAL KEYBOARDS). I've seen some other anons mention, nothing successfully, that they were trying to connect gaming controllers to their Android phone in lieu of the phone's on board controls.
Does anyone have any experience with any of this specific to the Eris?
Since we're talking about it, I wanted to share my experiences with the Mini USB port on the Eris.
The Eris will accept Mini USB style-B connecters (white) but I've had trouble with this a couple of times. Once, my PC had difficulty staying connected with it. Twice, I had trouble charging with the generic cables. Once was from the PC, once was from the supplied HTC charger (but not the HTC-supplied cable)
The HTC-supplied cable (black) is much better at staying connected. But it isn't "improved" in my opinion. The matching port that accepts both styles is very loose with the more popular Mini-USB style B. In my opinion, that makes the whole concept of "unique, yet compatible with other popular styles" somewhat useless. I can't use the cable that came with the phone with other things like my Canon ELPH, my PS3 controller, etc. So I might as well take the cable wherever I go with the phone.
Does anyone know where I can get more of the HTC-styled USB cables? Surely it is not proprietary, I SWEAR I have seen this style elsewhere.
If you are willing to do the work, you can plug just about anything into it.
After your post earlier, I checked into the host mode for the Android OS. This is what I found.
USB Host mode on Motorola Droid Chris Paget's Blog
If you get an adapter that will work, you can plug a full fledged keyboard into your droid.
Picture: Mini vs Micro USB
My samsung laser copier/scanner has a usb port on the front for a usb flash drive. our phone works perfect for that, so I can scan pdf files and images directly to my phone.
I've used both of these for file transfers and charging with no issues.
i believe you are looking for an extusb cable. just google search for a good deal. if your lazy, you can get it for 3.99 here.
