Droid 2 is coming out soon, so it makes sense that they would stop selling the original. Plus Motorola doesn't want us messing with our own phones, so it's in their company's interest to get anything without a locked up bootloader out of the stores.

There is a website that has a few left for $49.99 with a 2 year contract extension. PM me if you want the site. They are an authorized reseller. I ordered two Sunday and they arrived this morning.

so so so angry I won't be getting a Droid 2. stupid Motorola, stupid bootloader. even a successful hack isn't going to get me another motorola phone.

VIO is no longer supporting a business model of increased user restriction.

Not doubting these reports. But FYI, an Austin Verizon store told us on Friday they have Moto Droids in stock. And my husband had to do a warranty replacement and received his new Moto Droid yesterday (via Fed Ex). In speaking to the Verizon rep on the phone, I received no indication of any shortage of replacement Moto Droids.

It's a regional thing as far as the website stock is concerned. Mine shows as "available 8/25".
