I signed up for this forum because I had recently gotten my Eris and it seemed very appealing to have a online community which was devoted to such an amazing piece of device.

Anyways the question is regarding the 2.1 update. I know, I know many of you are like go search. But the thing is that this question has not been asked alot from what I have seen on the forum.

So considering that verizon has the update, why are they toying with us and why don't they just release it all over the nation or on the verizon site already?
Just seems silly for them to mess with us like this

They are releasing it over a period of 2 weeks starting 5/11.

    The question has been asked.
They release it to very few customers at first to make sure it goes smoothly. That way if there is some major bug they only replace 1000 phones instead of millions.
As the days go on, they will send out larger and larger batches of OTAs.

They are doing this to prevent a total disaster! If something goes wrong on a small batch of OTA updates, then its just that, a small batch of problems. As opposed to every eris owner calling Verizon asking whats wrong with their phone. They are doing this with our best interests in mind. Trust me.
Easy fix though, flash 2.1 v3!

also, there's the whole "millions of people downloading all at once could take down the server" issue. it'd be like a DDoS attack from hell.

  6. Verizon would be "messing with us" if they attempted to flood the airwaves with tens of thousands of downloads simultaneously, whether from a link at their website or via Over The Air (OTA).

Small, incremental releases have a much better chance to run smoothly for us.

No...I know what he is saying. Why don't they just put it up on the site for download? It appears that the file that is currently written for the update does not support an upgrade from download. People have been trying to load the OTA manually with no success. Perhaps they just didn't want to write the extra code to make it work for a manual download because they did enough by sending it OTA.

not 100% true. people with leaks have no success, but multiple people who are coming from 1.5 got it to work. see here

It's funny. Phone updates have been occurring for decades through various roll-out methods and schedules with no one the wiser. Now that we're more aware of the process, they're "toying with us".

Funny how a little information brings out the tinfoil hats.

It's also interesting that our lives are so easy that this is what constitutes a real problem for some of us. For that, we should be grateful.

But possibly the reason leakers cannot upgrade to OTA is that the OTA is not a complete installer. Upload the complete installer as they did with the leaks and perhaps we can do it.

Paul (one of the guys who messes with developing) believes that the bootloader from 1.5 did not change in the OTA. Just for those of us who used a leaked version. I need to look over there and see if anyone confirmed his belief.

Yeah, I just saw that. It looks right and that will prevent us from getting any OTA in the future if it's true.

if it changed the loaded to the point where future OTAs are impossible, how come leakers are still getting OTA this time? not sure i understand...i've no understanding of code tho, stick to hardware/software, not coding.

Me too, but I don't believe any leakers have gotten the OTA.

this poll would seem to disagree

unless what you mean is that you don't believe the leakers who have said they got the ota.

OK...back to conspiracy theory...oh I never thought I'd go here but I'll entertain it for a bit anyway.

A leaked version was handed down to us a couple of months back. About a week later, a mysterious file was dropped on a couple of users that allowed for folks on 1.5 to root their phones. Meanwhile, nearly all developers and dedicated geeks upgraded to the leak. Different bootloader, back to square one. This pretty much fragmented the scene and it left some folks working on trying to get our leaked versions to go backwards while some worked on rooting the leaked versions. Paul stated that Verizon/HTC really likes to have their phones locked down. So were we being tested to see how strong their vulnerability could be? Is the joke on us leakers? For now...

By the way, this has no bearing on leakers getting OTA. Even if we do get OTA, as some have said (including a couple of members that have been around for a while), then they are still using the latest bootloader from the leak.

It's more likely that they voters misunderstand the question. There hasn't been one reliable report of a leaker being able to apply the update.

Great call. Not only locking down the phones but preventing them from being sold on Ebay and the like. If what you say is true, the only way to outfox them is to have the devs get us back our boot loader.

It is starting to look like they pulled a fast one on us, isn't it? I'm going to head over to the Verizon store today and speak with the manager whom I gave the leak to last month and get his take on this.

Ha! I have called people foolish for having their conspiracies on here so I have to eat crow on some of it.

If something like this were true, then they know that a vulnerability will eventually be found, but it allows for testing the devs a bit. A cat and mouse game if you will. I'm not sure if I even believe any of what I wrote, but it was plausible enough to at least share my madness. :D

Oh..and for those who say what about Moto Droid..diff. company...no Sense. G1 and others? Not Verizon.

  23. Every single one of the leakers are of the same misunderstanding mindset?

Why would any of this make you upset? If you were running the V3 leak, you just got what everyone else is getting a few weeks early.
