    Hello All,
I'm Randi & I've had my Evo 4G (version: 2.3.5 w/ 2.18 hboot) for almost a year now. I was totally satisfied until just a short while ago: low enternal space, no screenshot, general boredom. So, I looked into rooting.

    I want to:
    • remove the bloatware
    • be able to force apps, such as the newly released internal memory hog, Instagram to my SD card
    • download root required apps, such as Screenshot
    • enable customization features (ROMs) to make my phone pretty :p

I've been researching for WEEKS. Now I just don't know where to turn. I've read soooooo much that I'm overloaded with information, so I'm even more confused as to where to begin or even what I'm really trying to do. I've read the same guides over & over & they just lead me to more guides, I'm just getting a little discouraged. I'm okay with computers, so I'm fairly confident in being able to do the actual process itself. I just don't know where to start or what I'm really doing. I'm in need of MAJOR guidance...

    Do I need full root?
What is the big difference about s-on & s-off?
Is my phone "gingerbread" or... ???
What is the difference between: Revolutionary, unrEVOked, & htcdev? I don't understand quite what they really do...

I'm definitely past the point of thinking TOO much :(

    welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok in order to point you inthe right direction we need to know some info from your phone.

you will need to go to your bootloader. to get there you will need to power off the phone (make sure that you have fastboot, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot) then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. at the top of the screen will be your hboot version. your hboot version will determone how you will need to root your phone.

if you have hboot 2.10 or less then you will use unrevoked to root your phone. here is the guide for it:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/491123-evo-4g-all-things-root-guide.html

if you have hboot 2.16 then you will need to use revolutionary to root you. here is the guide for it:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

if you have hboot 2.18 then you will need to use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

if you have hboot 2.18 having s-off is not as important as it used to be. basically when you go from s-on to s-off you have turned your phone's security off so that you can gain root. but with hboot 2.18 htc has locked the bootloader, but they have allowed us the ability to unlock it via HTCdev so that you can still root the phone but still have s-on. you will have a watermarked bootloader and thus void any warranties you still have on the phone.

hope that helped. please feel to ask more questions if you have them.
