The time has come to move on

    Hi guys!

So, the time has come when I will move on from my beloved Desire.
And I am sorry to say (and I expect the usual bashing and sarcastic comments) but I will most likely be upgrading to an iPhone 4.
I am posting here for 2 main reasons:

    1. To discuss my reasons for moving on
    2. To describe how much I have loved my Desire and this forum

    1. On June 1st I am eligible for an upgrade and can get quite a good trade in price from CPW. I like to upgrade when I can and had a look around the market but the newest HTC phones don't really do anything for me if I'm honest - the upgrade would not be massive.
Since I have ventured into the smart phone world, I have had two Android phones and loved them. But iOS, although it does have its bad points, it is a very good OS and I feel I should give it a go. As well as the nice UI (I know to everyones tastes) and the awesome hardware of the iPhone 4, there is one massive reason I am choosing the iPhone 4 and that is the range of apps. Particularly medical apps. I am a medical student and while in the wards I end up dragging around endless text books, pharmaceutical books etc as quick reference. Likewise, when on the train/bus/in lectures I usually haul round a load of books to look up medicine. However, many of these books are available as iOS apps. This is obviously not needed for everyone so but it is a massive selling point. And there is nowhere near this sort of selection in the Android Market. And through the magic of Jailbreaking (just like I rooted my Desire) I can get...
But as I said, the iPhone 4 is also an incredible piece of hardware - camera, screen, build quality. Reception issues will be no biggy really as I always have had cases for smart phones as I'm a clumsy oaf so I will have a case on my iPhone.

    2. My Desire has been a wonderful phone. Starting off, battery life was a bit disappointing but a few tweaks and it got much better. Then I rooted and through kernels and custom ROMs I got insane battery life. As well as insane performance and lots of fun. The camera is pretty damn good. Agree or disagree, the iPhone 4 is slightly better but the Desire camera really is quite awesome, especially if you remove the small cover.
Then I come onto Sense. Its like Marmite, some love it, some hate it. But for me I liked the way it bought lots of things together. I have experimented with custom ROMS, currently on MIUI but I will always love Sense.

But then one thing I really need to do is talk about this forum. What a fantastic place it is. Everyone on here is stupidly helpful. SURoot, Eddy OS, Rastaman to name but a few have helped me several times to really unlock what my Desire could really do through the process of rooting.
So to them, and everyone else who has helped me, thank you very much.
I will continue to browse these forums and try to help people as I now know a fair bit about rooting. And I like to keep track of what people are capable of unlocking on the Desire.

I know this post is going to attract the usual iOS comments and stuff but I just wanted to say thank you and discuss my reasons for upgrading and moving on from HTC/Android.

Fair points there, The iPhone 4 is still an incredible phone. I do love my Android though. It seems like the iPhone 4 is right for you so all I can say is, enjoy your new iPhone :)

Normally I'd say that if it's June you should wait a few weeks, as iPhone models are usually announced at Apple's June conference. But although rumours are not always reliable with Apple, there seem to be a lot of people saying that the next model will be later this year.

Anyway, I'm not going to bash either - I understand the appeal of the iPhone 4, and came close to buying one myself. So good luck with the med degree, and I'm sure your phone will serve you well.

Think maybe that was meant to go to me??? You havent mentioned them! I have removed the offensive sentence though. Forgot that was one of the rules, and rules are rules!

I can understand your reasons I suppose.

But I'm not sure the Desire is a fair representation of Android in general. The Android platform has evolved massively in terms of both software and hardware since the Desire came out. Now sure, the Desire can achieve a lot of this by rooting etc, but I see your point.

But I think its a shame to abandon everything thats good about Android. The new devices, like the Sensation and the SGS2 are really in a different league. And solve more or less all the problems you state above. I love the openness. I just couldn't cope going back to iOS after this. But I know others are different. Give it another year, and I reckon iOS will be a lot less significant IMO.

PS. Why are you upgrading now. Firstly, the iPhone 5 will no doubt be out soon. Secondly, that means the 4 will likely drop in price?

Anyway, goodbye :) (I bet you will return one day ;) )

I'd be very surprised (and disappointed) if that happens in this forum. ;)

Enjoy whatever device you move onto, and remember that there's no mandatory Android ownership requirement to post here on AF. No need to "move on" in that sense. :)

I'm not due an upgrade until May of next year at the earliest, so I have no idea what will be available by then.

However, based on phones currently available, if I was able to upgrade right now, I'd be very tempted to go with the Samsung Galaxy SII.

Yep. As mentioned in other threads, the recession has hit my industry hard. Many of us are working below our skill level on massively reduced incomes. I am unfortunately such a case, earning 54% of what I earned 2 years ago.

Unfortunately, buying a handset outright is not an option.

Although its battered and bruised, I do not feel I am missing out on anything. The handset does what I want and need so for now at least I am happy.

Im glad Ive taken good care of my Desire. Its still in pristine condition no marks or blemishes whatsoever! But I cant see meself selling it cos Ive grown attached to it. I swear Ive never played soooo much with one gadget in my entire life lol Its been fun fiddling around with it over the past year or so and I suspect I could easily hang onto it for another year or more.

That's drastic, 54%? Keep your head up mate!
As discussed in the other thread, I don't see any reasons hardware-wise to move, unless one is a hardcore gamer. And even then I'd say take a good book instead  No need to spend that much money and put a perfectly proper phone to rest that quick.

    I agree.

Tell me about it. I had to stop collecting swiss watches. Also instead of buying suits from Harvey nichols, I buy work trousers from Asda!

I could afford to buy more expensive clothes but meh... got a expensive PC and car habit to maintain ;)
