Thin red flashing line around screen perimeter. What to do?

My 2.5 year old S5 just started developing a thin red line (about 1/16") around the screen perimeter. However, it never appears when the phone is untouched and resting (except as noted below**). It flashes only when the screen is touched in certain actions.

It never flashes when tapping on a text message. It flashes always when tapping the "go back" arrow on the lower right, but once the home screen is reached, tapping on the arrow does not cause the red rim flash. It always occurs when tapping the lower left "recent apps" icon. ** If one goes to the "Active application" screen which shows "ram status", the red rim flashes regularly every two seconds.

It never occurs when pressing any part of the screen when the dialpad is showing. Never occurs when pressing the HOME button. It occurs when pressing the calendar app, but never when the days are showing or when entering an event.

Seems like it's a preference selection, maybe in the Developer's Menu. Anyone have an idea as to the cause or how to find the cause? Doesn't seem likely to be hardware.

    Thanks.

I found the answer over at xda-developers. Scroll to the bottom of this thread. In a nutshell In Developer options under User interface turn on Strict mode > Restart your phone > Go back to Developer options turn off Strict Mode > Restart your phone.

Wow! That took care of it. Must have turned that on by mistake. What is the value of having strict mode on?

    Thank you so much.
