Thinking of upgrading beyond the Ascend?

Hey Ascend users,

I'm speaking from a Cricket point of view, but it might apply to Metro PCS...

I got my Ascend back in November when it was still relatively new. It was my first Android device (and smart phone for that matter) and got me hooked on Android.

So maybe you're like me and you've had it a while, you put custom roms on it, but ultimately you want more out of your phone. I found myself disappointed at how few games could actually run on it, and with Amazon App Store giving away a free app every day (games a lot of the time), it became too much and I had to start thinking about upgrading to something more capable.

The Samsung Indulge was released and got my attention, but the retail value of about $300 was too big of a risk for me to buy something so new and not heavily reviewed. I also wanted root access and custom roms.

Anyway, a few more phones have been released by Cricket that look like they might be pretty good, so maybe you're considering one of them.

Just in case you aren't aware, there are actually other options! Many Sprint and Verizon phones can be flashed to Cricket. If you're tech savvy enough to follow directions to put new roms on your phone, then you might be ready to go just a bit more advanced and flash a phone from another carrier.

Once I learned it was possible, I started Google searching and found directions and potential phones that can be flashed.

I really wanted a physical keyboard, so I opted for the Motorola Droid 2 from Verizon. I got a used one from Craigslist for $125, flashed it to Cricket, and put Gingerbread on it. It is a night and day difference from the Ascend!

Anyway, I'm not providing links or anything since most of what I found was on other sites and forums. I just wanted to let people know there are options. If you work at it, you can end up with a really great phone for not much money.

I also want to thank everyone here who has worked so hard to make the Ascend as awesome as possible. It was a great Android introduction for me, and the resources and help provided here are spectacular.
