    That is the question.

Would a folding phone be of any interest to anyone? I'm at a loss to see the appeal, other than it's new and has some geek cred.

    That is (indeed) the question.

I wasn't impressed when the first short vids of it came out couple months ago. But as it matures I could see it being interesting.

It's a bit bulky. Not the most practical of devices, IMO.

If all other things were equal, what would a folding phone bring to the party? At least with a "roll-up" phone you could drink your Dr. Pepper or shoot an occasional spitball.

Didn't Back to the future already had their mitts on this? I had a dream of where cellphones really rolled into cylanders, and you can place them on your wrist..

For those who want a tablet in their pocket this could be useful, but other then that not sure.

When it's folded the phone is huge for a 4.6 inch screen, it looks odd.

Still very impressive technology. Will be interesting to see what the middle of the large screen looks like after 2 years of folding and unfolding.

$1,980 is way out of my price range though.

It might look odd and the price range is steep though, I just wondered if they are going to price it right given in a few years from now..

Maybe like Samsung's previous $2000 luxury phones, and only distributed and sold in Asia, mainly Korea and China.

No, they've given dates for US and EU releases.

The basic concept has uses. But this device? It depends what you use a tablet for. I use mine for work, so require it to be somewhat bigger than this (I estimate that the unfolded screen is about 94*160 mm^2, so about 1/4 of a sheet of A4 paper in area) and to have stylus support. So to me this would be no use as a tablet. Perhaps for some people it will work out, though I'm waiting for the whinging to start when people realise that the 14:10 aspect ratio means you have "black bars" when watching a video (oh, the horror, the horror!).

But then I think claiming it combines phone and tablet is marketing spin. It's really a particularly large screen phone that folds for portability and has an external screen so you can use it when folded. It doesn't have enough utility for me to justify that price - I'd probably be prepared to pay half that for it, because I'd personally find it slightly more useful than a regular phone. Of course that is less than Samsung and Apple already want for some of their flagships, but I don't think they represent particularly good value for the functionality offered either.

$1,900 for a bleeping phone,??? No bleeping way, :maddroid:
I can get a decent phone for $500-$900 and use the rest of the money for other more important stuff

That is a tough pill to swallow, especially with 1st gen *totally new* tech. No clue how practical it is, how usable. The thing is a beast

Does the phone ship folded or flat? Just curious.

Do I want a folding phone; Yes
Can I afford a folding phone; No

Price is the only thing keeping me away. Geek cred is high with these devices. ;)
