To go Froyo, or not to go Froyo, that is the question

So, Froyo is finally here... and I find myself at a crossroads.

I've recently settled in with voodoo5. Love it... my phone is snappy, responsive, no freezing no problems. Should I wait till custom kernels are available for froyo, or is it snappy and good enough to just flash and enjoy right now?

Question is, basically, is it worth making the switch now?

depends on what you need...if you needed chrome to phone, flash, updated gmail etc then go now..otherwise you may want to wait

If you don't mind me asking, what have you decided to stick with or choose?

If you are rooted there is no reason to not go to dl30 imo. Overall froyo is snappier and although you may get an occasional slowdown due to rfs its not nearly as bad as it was with eclair.

The updated google apps are worth the jump in themselves.

The only reason I can think of for staying on eclair is the suspect battery life of froyo at the moment. Its not too terrible but its not as good as the kernels were for 2.1

I'm on DL30 at the moment more out of curiosity and to get a look at what's coming down the pipe, but honestly I'm considering restoring my Superclean 2.1/voodoo5 build. 2.2 is nice, and definitely a speed improvement over stock 2.1, but I don't find it to be hugely faster than 2.1 voodoo. GPS is spotty, browser doesn't have text size options, battery life is going to be worse until radios and kernels are out, very few themes to choose from, etc.

well you can always use an alternate browser...that issue wont change with any version of 2.2 that gets ota-ed or comes out

and the themes are starting to pour out...in a day or two there will probably be 10 or so out

Right now I am running the DJ05 modem with Voodoo, should I flash the DL09 package first and then flash to DL30? Or should I just go straight to DL30 and keep the DJ05 radio? Will DL30 eventually get its own radio version as well?

when i disable voodoo, do i have to disable both the lagfix and the system lagfix or whatever it is called?

I would swear that that jt's aosp had text size options in the browser, but perhaps I'm misremembering. In any case, using an alternate browser (Dolphin HD) is exactly what I'm doing for now. Still don't know why they'd remove a feature like that. The default text size is much too small, imo.

Oh yeah I know, that wasn't a primary concern for me, just mentioning it in passing.

In spite of several nitpicks, I think the 2.2 leak, even at stock, is enough of an improvement over 2.1 that I'll probably just hang in.

Well, as I was typing this in the other thread, this one got started and since it's more on-topic, I'll re-post it here:

    My thoughts on DL30:

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it.

This DL30 is NOT ready for PrimeTime. Buggy as all get out, just trying to install or uninstall apps is a nightmare - the entire phone keeps locking on the install process, or if it does go thru (just the first couple did) it won't UNinstall. Package installer keeps freezing. Market is spotty as hell (and why is it back to the old one). Look at the headers in task manager - notice the blue "burst" coming from the right side? Yep the whole bar is mis-aligned by about 1/32". Letters on the keypad are wrong. The whole thing just feels "shaky" and I can't trust this phone with DL30 on it. Not even for the simplest things.

    Constant freezing and locking up.

And yes, data has been wiped (more times than I can count, every single way possible). Phone has been completely wiped, restored to DL09 stock, flashed with new DL30_leak.zip (downloaded from 3 separate mirrors and hash-checked), new CWM, everything has been done - I'm no noob at this stuff.

No matter what I do - package installer freezes. The entire phone locks up about every 5 minutes and becomes completely unresponsive. Gmail is hit or miss. Mostly miss on my end, every once in a while I'll get it to pull up and then it freezes. Even stock apps are behaving badly. And no, I have NOT restored any backups (Titanium or otherwise) - tried that the first go round and everything went into a FC loop.

And this is the 3rd time I've wiped and re-installed. When I revert back to Adryn's 12/30 UV non-voodoo kernel and my "safe" DL09 nandroid backup - my phone is pure, blazing fast DL09 goodness. As soon as I try to load DL30 - it becomes almost useless.

I had a pretty good idea that this was alphaware - but I tried b/c I knew I had a solid DL09 nandroid to fall back on. And that's exactly what I'll be doing until a couple tested and bug-fixed versions are released. I give nothing but props to the guys who put this out, and I know fully the risks involved with alpha/betaware. I was hoping for a little more polished "out of the box" FroYo experience. Not to be at the moment. Now we start to see why FroYo hasn't been pushed to the SF yet.

It's not ready. If VZW were to push this version it would be a support nightmare. I'm wiping (AGAIN) and going back to my uv'd, totally smokin' DL09 for a week or so until this gets worked out. I'm sure it will, but folks if you are even a BIT hesitant about doing this, I strongly recommend you wait until either a tested and proven version is out, and/or VZW releases it officially. Save yourself the headache and keep a working phone. Or, get really really good and restoring nandroid backups and re-flashing kernels!!!

I'm rather frustrated with the whole thing myself Justin. I've tried both the full DL30_leak and SuperClean (v.06 and .07).

I have slightly better success with the full leak, vs the SuperClean. Regardless, both freeze, don't like installing apps, and just generally behave badly. There seems to be a percentage of SF's that simply don't like this update. I had the triple haptic buzz-buzz-buzz then freeze the first time. I then wiped everything - totally stock DL09 including total restore and then flashed to DL30 and the new CWM. Every time I get the same issues.

Seeing as the phone has been wiped to factory stock, then upgraded, and my phone works PERFECT on any DL09 or DI01 version I try, I have no choice but to suspect the DL30 ROM as questionable. I've never had a hardware problem on this phone, GPS has always been good (even under DI01!) and it's only when I try to load any version on DL30 that it goes haywire. If you or Saps or someone else who knows what they are doing has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Not saying everyone will have the same experience. Just lettin' everyone know what my particular situation is over here, and a fair warning that even though we've all been waiting ages for FroYo, it may be worth waiting for a newer leak or official version, coz this one is WHACK. At least on my phone it is.

I'm getting so quick as reflashing 1230 UV NONvoodoo and restoring my Nandroid that it completed while I was typing this post! ;)

yeah i can only speak from my experience which has been fine...and if you believe forums and irc in general its fine for the vast majority of people...but everyone phone is different and everyone has unique problems with different set ups

There have also been a number of people with the weird haptic problems and TW fc'ing out the yang. Most of that is due to folks who have no business flashing radio's and ROM's, but even among those that do - there's still a percentage of us with problems on this ROM.

Heck it's already over 30 days out of date and is incomplete to begin with. That tells me a lot about the state of this ROM. I would be shocked if this is the version that goes OTA.

I'm glad that you and most are having a positive experience. For me, the little bit of newness that FroYo offers is not worth giving up a rock-solid, stable, blazing fast custom DL09. Everyone I know with a newer droid has 2.2... it's simply not that impressive to me. Really all I like about it is the improved pull down shade with data and rotation options, the black status bar, and the darker blue notification windows. ;)

this build is what is in testing for vzw...so theres a good chance the ota will be exactly like this

So you are saying that they are still testing a 30+ day old ROM with none of their own software installed in it? No VCast or VNav? You know how much money VZW makes off those apps I highly doubt they would release a version without their pay-app stubs included.

From what I understand VZW's "test period" is 14 days. At the end of that time frame, it either passes and gets prepped for OTA, or scrapped and sent back to Sammy with a bug-fix list. This version has misaligned image files, incorrect labeling on the dial pad, among other "weirdness". Unless those were accidentally messed up by the devs when they stripped out the watermarks, do you really think that stuff will fly for an official release? I don't.

Hey, if this is what they release, and the OTA/offical does to my phone what the test build is doing, I'll be able to call in and get a new phone under warranty. No problem for me! :D

all i can say is what i hear...and dl09 was about as buggy as an ota can be so theres that to consider

just stick with your previous 2.1 setup that you seemed happy with id say then :)

Oh I'm deffo sticking with 2.1 for now! No doubt. 4 times I've wiped and restored this phone to stock, then upgraded only to have it run like doo-doo. I'm done with this particular build. Once the devs have this for a couple weeks I'm sure we'll see plenty of stable, fast options. Super clean .07 seemed to run a little better, but EVERYTHING is stripped out and some of us actually do like having our contact pics update with FB, or using some of the other SNS features of the phone. I wish there was a less "drastic" version of a cleaned ROM. A more or less "full" version without the VZW crapware, and leave the SNS and other sync stuff and TW alone. There's really nothing between Full Bloated Stock and Stripped Everything... Ah, dreams...

DL09 was rushed, no doubt. I think Sammy and VZW were getting tired of the PR nightmare and constant barrage of criticism for not releasing updates, especially when Sammy's flagship VZW model had serious GPS and radio issues at launch. They had to put SOMETHING out to shut people up and give them a leg to stand on from a support persoective. ;) Doesn't mean it was a great release, it just fixed the GPS for many people... Although, strangely enough, DL09 runs way better for me that DI01 or DL30. Honestly, there aren't any showstopping bugs in my DL09, but many in DL30 - where as most have issues with DL09 and seem to be OK on DL30. Weird.

I think 2.2, and possibly one MR release a couple months later, are all we are going to see (officially) from Sammy/VZW. It makes sense to me that they take some time and get this one right. I have a hard time believing that they are still currently testing a buggy, incomplete FroYo from December in early Feb. We all only know what we hear, but I've heard pretty solidly that VZW has a 14 day test cycle, and it either passes or fails. That means there would have been 3 days between DL09 getting pushed out and this build ending testing. Does it really make sense that they pushed a buggy rushed gps-fix out when they were mere days away from having an approved 2.2 build? Seems more likely that they realized that 2.2 was still buggy and they needed to push a GPS fix or they would end up with lots of returned phones and PO'd customers. Again, lots of conjecture in there, but you better believe it costs VZW a bunch of cash to push those OTA's and I can't seem them pushing one out if they knew there was solid 2.2 right behind it ready for release.

Anywho - we're getting way off topic here. Sorry!

Good luck to those who go DL30. Hope yours goes better than mine did! :)

You might wanna try flashing the di01 all in one odin file. Then reflashing froyo. That odin is the only one that really comepletely wipes out everything. It could be something left over that is causing problems.

From what I have seen everyone is having great performance from DL30. If using the di01 odin doesnt fix anything then I would say you just got unlucky with the draw of phones.

OMJ - if I get a wild hair, or an hour or so to kill, I may well try that. That's the ONLY thing I have not done. I used the DL09 complete Odin restore - to save the extra step of re-flashing the radio to DL09. It did wipe everything as best I can tell, I had some bootanimation.old files that were in my system/media folder and those along with everything else I could see was wiped and returned to stock with the DL09.tar. It was my understanding that DL09 restore was a full factory wipe/restore file. Now if that is not the case, I'll gladly try a full DI01 -> DL30 -> flash DL09 radio -> New CWM if that's now the approved method.

I don't mind the extra step, I just didn't see the point in going all the way back to DI01 only to reflash the radio from DL09. Maybe there is something to it. I'll give it a shot at some point, it's literally the only thing I have not done.

the di01 all in one odin flashes a couple other partitions that none of the other ones do. It generally the odin I use to fix any kind of problems Im having.

It may work and it may not but it is the best chance of getting it working for sure.

Yeah I know there are DJ05 and DL09 all-in-one's but I still use the DI01 for a return to stock experience. Im going to flash a DJ05 rom anyway so my only extra step is the DJ05 radio which I dont mind spending a few seconds doing.
I know Monkey Grass you must be frustrated I understand that. Equally true with so many other people having blemish free success with DL30 something is likely getting lost in translation. Im on superclean and I understand it does not have some of the thing you want but at this point things are what they are. I do hope you find a solution that works well for you. Equally true if you are content on 2.1 more power to you. 2.1 on this phone is still a nice experience
