Total Noob Question about the Droid Razr M and Rooting

Ok y'all I'm just going to come out and preface this by saying that I'm a noob when it comes to rooting phones and don't quite understand it. What is rooting exactly? What are the benefits to rooting? Does it void the phone's warranty? And what is the best method for rooting the Droid RAZR M running 4.1.1 Jelly Bean?

In essence, administrator privileges are your phone are blocked and rooting the phone unlocks them for you. It does technically void your warranty, though it isn't always checked for if you send it in for repair. Some benefits are the ability to use apps that require root such as Titanium Backup(for backing up apps with their data in case you ever need to reset or get a new phone), using an ad-blocker app, and manipulate the system files. Some negatives is that it does compromise the security of you device, and obviously voiding of warranty. The best place to look for rooting instructions would be in the All Things Root subforum. Make sure you do all the reading, and follow instructions precisely if you decide to go down this road. Rooting generally involves exploiting security holes in the system and one wrong move could potentially brick your device.
