Many causes have been identified, from merely a trackball in need of cleaning (alcohol wipes run over it thoroughly) to a defective or damaged trackball assembly.

I'd start with a live battery pull, failing that, a good cleaning with alcohol wipes, failing that a factory data reset, failing that replacement of the phone.

Time to head for the Verizon store for a remedy or replacement, then. You've done your best to fix it on your own, it appears; their turn. ;)

By the way, you say, "almost." What have you not done, of those things I listed?

If a rooted phone is doing that, I'd really suspect the trackball being dirty or damaged.. you say life of the phone.. was it malfunctioning before rooting?

That's the old dichotomy of rooting.. most users having to unroot to get something needed done at a Verizon store.
