There are lots of back-up suggestions in this thread from March 2016...

    Backup! Backup! Backup! NOW!

Backing up Contacts is easy, as mentioned in the thread, by just ensuring that they are all sync'd to your gmail account, along with calendar, etc: I would not rely on Samsung Switch to transfer stuff to another make of phone. One tip that is not mentioned in that thread that is now available, is if you install Google Messages on your phone you can set it as default and it will copy across your SMS and you can sync it with your Google account and your messages will be restored on your new phone after signing in and installing Google Messages on the new phone.

smart switch will only work if you are going from a different android device to a samsung device. it will not work the other way around unfortunately.

sms backup works great. i have been a samsung owner since the note 3. but before that i owned several htc phones which i have used sms backup to save my text messages. i'm not sure what other apps that are out there that will save other forms of data, unfortunately.

if you have your contacts backed up to google, then all you need to do is sign in to your google acct and your contacts will be there
like i said google does a great job of this
like i posted earlier sms backup works great for text messages.....not sure on call logs though. never seen anyone ask that or have i come across an app for that.....sorry.

To transfer data from samsung s5 to xiaomi redmi note 9s, I think Samsung Smart Switch does not work, cause they not both Samsung phones. And just like you said in the post, most mobile transfer tool are not free. Sometimes we can get the registered code from its giveaway activity. Then we can use such tools without limit.

I usually try to transfer contacts, SMS and settings (if it's possible). There are couple of PC apps which can help with that. It's prtty easy when you know what software to use. For example, when I've been trying to transfer my data from one help desk system to another and make freshdesk to zendesk migration there are only few software companies showed me great products which can help.
