Am going to be travelling to Australia and New Zealand in future, and want to use my HTC Desire HD while there. It is currently locked, but will be getting it unlocked before travel. Looking for suggestions regarding service providers for voice, data and text, as well as providing a sim card for use in the phone.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks
    Bill

I didn't have a smart phone when I travelled there but I do remember their sim only deals being quite good! Just head into a phone shop when you are there and have a chat with them

Vodafone and 3 (here in Australia) have some pretty good deals.
My wife is on the AU$29.00/mth prepaid, and with me and a lot of friends on VF or 3 we get lots of free talk time. (VF to 3 here is the same as VF to VF)

Compare mobile plans, prepaid, contract, and caps

Have a good trip, you'll love it here.

Telstra all the way for best coverage. Period.

Notice I don't say best deal / price / package. But they have the broadest 3g network.

They all suck in their own ways, but Telstra has the best coverage in Australia (don't know about New Zealand) and for your needs I'd say go with them, unless you're sticking to the capital cities in which case just grab the best deal available when you get off the plane.

Sorry to sound negative; but I haven't had a carrier I'm really happy with in the more than 10 years I've had a mobile.
