Help tried tonepicker, still cant scilence notifications

Did some searching about trying to set up custom notifications for email and text and scilence the rest, it seems that people were having good results by using tone picker to scilence all notifications then setting custom ones in each app, however when I try to select silent through tone picker or andriod for default notifications it doesn't take. And ideas?

goto your messaging app>press menu>goto settings>go down to select ringtone and press it>select silent

im actually trying to do the oppisite, im trying to set the Default noticifaction sound to silent so you dont have that loud tone when you plug in, and then set custom sounds for messages and everything else, i have the custom email/text sounds that i want just trying to kill the plug in sound, it seems others have had luck with tone picker but for me when i use it to set the default to silent it wont take
