I made my own ringtone and I put it in system/media/ringtone but when I try to apply it for a contact, it doesn't show up as an option. Any suggestions?

you can do this via the music app. put the ringtone in your music folder. open music app. find ringtone file, long press and make ringtone.

what file type did you use? I don't think wav files work after 2.2 but I could be mistaken.

I have added over 100 the way you did above...but the wav files stopped working

When I put it in the music folder and then open the music app it says no music found. It's an mp3.

Strangely enough I rebooted the device and now I can add it as a contact ringtone via the HTC picker.

What I like about Ringtone MP3 is that it gives you the ability to find almost any song and then clip it to a ringtone. It will default to the first 15 seconds but you can select a start and stop for any part of the song in seconds.
