I have clockwork recovery on my phone. I am currently running phoenix rom on my cpativate, but i need to send it back to att because of random shutdowns. I try flashing back to out of the box eclair using odin, but everytime i plug into odin i cant flash it back to eclair. it recognizes my phone but cant get past the first stage of odin. I really need your guys help to send it back and get a new phone.

im curious about this too as i was told NOT to use odin on my new captivate. def want to know how to get back to stock without odin if i need to

Check XDA forums, there is a fix for this. Regular odin doesn't work on all builds 1010 and newer.

BEFORE you try and flash with Odin through the link tsolly posted...

What is your phone's batch number? (Located on a sticker, behind the battery. Looking for something like 1006, 1007, 1008, 1010, 1012)

There's a little more to this then just "No Odin for batch 1010 and above"

Batch 1010 and 1012 phones can be flashed with Odin, but NOT with Odin One-Click. These phones must be flashed using Odin3, where the process is a little more manual, with more steps involved.

Here are the instructions for flashing with Odin3:
xda-developers - View Single Post - Build number of your phone?

Again, this all depends on your phone's batch number. Just like ls2gto said, it's on a sticker under your battery. You're looking for something like 1006, 1007, 1008, 1010, 1012.

Odin's tricky and, sometimes, a huge PITA. I suggest that once you do make it behave, write down the steps you took to reach that point of mutual respect because there's a resonable chance you'll need it down the road.

As for me, I have to throw salt over my left shoulder, spin around three times in my chair, and perform the sacred Odin dance. Then, and only then, will it work for me.

Not far from the truth.

In my opinion, the only "tricky" part is finding the driver(s) for your computer. Some people have success using the Captivate specific Windows drivers, some using the Samsung Galaxy S generic drivers.

I flash with Odin One-Click and Odin3 almost on a weekly basis, using different machines running different hardware, and sometimes even virtual machines for the hell of it. Once I find the right drivers for each machine, it's pretty smooth from that point forward.

Yeah, I remember finally getting that part stabilized. Now I need to remember each time I flash to first start Odin, then hold volume up/volume down buttons while plugging in the USB cable, etc., etc.

Difficult? No. It can just be daunting 'til the process becomes second nature.
