TW greenhorn. Need assistance installing Blu Kuban

Ive recently changed over to TW via stock rooted gc01. Cant stand it really and was shopping around for a more suitable alternative. Project X 2.0 was recommended to me by Doc but upon researching it I think I want something a bit more simplistic. Blu Kuban looks right up my alley and seems like an easier transition into TW for me.

Im very green to the world of Touch Wiz and wasnt sure what to do after I read the instructions for installing Blu Kuban. They seemed very vague and the only TW roms ive ever flashed have been done using a one click and not making a recovery. The processes of flashimg TW roms without one clicks is a new concept for me. Can someone give me a quick rundown and point me in the right direction?

What kernal do I use?

The kernel will usually come with the ROM when you flash it. There are two, the one by Garwynn and the one Agat made (this one supports OC).

If your ROMs flashing instructions include using el26 /el29 then do so, if not then the recovery kernel for your TW JB ROM you have will work fine. You have already did a one click of GC01 so your phone now has the format of a TW JB (the /preload partition is the new thing here). Other than that flashing is not all that different from AOSP ROMs.

Code is exactly correct, I installed Blue a while back and it runs very well, one of my fav TW roms.......

I just download one of those recoveries, mobile odin it, then boot that recovery. Wipe data, cache, dalvik. Flash rom then boot phone. Should I flash gb27 modem zip before I boot? Or come back after initial boot and flash it? Also, I guess once booted for the first time that I have to go to the updater and finish updating the rom? Thx guys

Ok what I do is get on the correct recovery, in this case agat and sounds like your there, then for me I wipe data/factory reset twice, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache, then flash the zip, I use GB27 for the modem and then reboot, it will take sometime on the first boot up and then you should be good to go.......

Well if you want OC ability without doing anything special to get it, then the Agat one is the kernel you want.

I went with Agat's. I'm on it now and let me just say, "Wow.". Very very cool ROM.

I did encounter something that I found extremely weird with my installation. I used mobile Odin and then PC Odin. Same result. Instead of the phone booting into the recovery, the phone booted up with stock gc01 which I had on it before. It booted not to how I had it set up but as if it was booting for the very first time. And yes in mobile Odin I clicked to wipe data and cache. So I figured it was a failure. Figured if that was still there then the wipes were unsuccessful and so was the kernel install. Tried this two times. Same thing. Then I went to PC Odin and it did the same thing. Said it passed and had flashed successfully, but it booted up gc01 again and not the recovery which I am used to seeing and expecting. Well, then it dawned on me at this point to shut down phone and do volume up and power to boot recovery. What do u know? There it was. Agat recovery.

So I decided to try flashing from here and it seems everything was a success. I wiped data twice, wiped cache and dalvik, then flashed blue Kuban zip then gb27 modem zip. Rebooted system.

Seems like it is working perfectly. What exactly happened? Was that as expected or an anomoly of sorts?

Also, I can't figure out how to make my lock screen and home screen from rotating, not without disabling auto-rotate altogether. Thanks guys.

Well first some TWs you don't need to use odin or at least I don't lol, GC01 yes you do, but if its a zip file for me anyways I just flash it from recovery either from CWM or Agats, but again its better to flash from the recovery of the rom your running, I switch from TWs to ASOP doing this but only if its a zip file, I know some of the guys us tar files in odin and it works just fine...

As far as the rotating setting, not sure as im not running the rom now, look around in the display setting or launcher setting, I run Apex and there is a setting in it for that.....

Okay, when you flashed Agat's kernel (which isn't a ROM but a core component of the OS) it will boot to GC01 or GB27. If over clocking is all you wanted then you could stop there. From there you can now reboot into recovery to flash your ROM or mods etc. If you flash a TW JB ROM and it includes its' own kernel (say Garwynn's one) which replaces your Agat TW JB kernel, you could then just reflash the Agat kernel. I can easily flip between the two kernels on the same ROM. The way you know what kernel you have is to just go into settings and about device, then look at the kernel version. Both Agat's kernel and Garwynn's (version .0.5.0) use Agat's recovery, and both will run GC01 just fine.

To make things easier if you don't happen to have a reboot menu that includes boot into recovery there are apps on the play store that will give you an easy menu to reboot into recovery. like this one

OK. Just seemed weird to me that it didn't boot into recovery after the flash. Just checking to make sure what I encountered was normal. This ROM is sick but Google now FC when opened and so does voice command. I'm digging it though its sweet

OK anybody that has blu kuban or experience with it...

My night rider light bar that goes across the screen at the top of the status bar isn't working anymore. Now instead of the red moving back and forth, a blue solid line is there on the right side of the screen, is taking up 2/3 of that real estate, and is not moving. I love the night rider theme and now that part isn't working. Any definitive answers on this?

Yep you need to change that in your battery toggle setting, i did that to mine and im like WTH is this, you can change it in the setting under battery toggle i think, its been awhile since i changed it but its in there lol.....

Why isn't it right after a fresh flash? I can't find the battery toggle option anywhere. Only thing I see is to put your battery percentage in the statusbar under "display". But in my mind, it shouldn't matter about this option when u do a fresh flash of the ROM? I'm very confused and a little irratated. Lol

Like i said its in there and when you do a new flash of any kind, always do a double wipe, i had that happen to me sometimes on modems from a prevoius build being installed on the rom i just flashed, started doing the double wipe and never had a problem afterwards....

I thought I did do a double wipe. I'm going to try again. If I double wipe and still don't have the light bar animation back, what the heck does that even mean? I'm gonna finish typing this and go reflash just to see.

Lol I feel pretty dumb right about now. There never was anything wrong with my phone. The red light bar animation only occurs when the phone is being charged. The solid blue line I was seeing was the battery gauge. Oops. Sorry to waste everyone's time.
