I've been tethering for years while on vacation ... but at lame connect speeds with my older 'dumb' phones via USB. This year, things have gotten so much better. My new Dell laptop (free from work) connects effortlessly to my DROID and the speeds are quite impressive.
If anyone still needs a reason to root their DROID, wireless tethering is a real world reason for laptop owners that travel and don't have a 3G card of some sort. Or iPad owners too.
