Team Win Recovery Project 2.x, or twrp2 for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. Its a fully touch driven user interface no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.

Over the course of the last year or so, bigbiff has worked to migrate various Java functions from Android's MTP implementation to bring you a fully C++ based MTP implementation that allows you to transfer files to both emulated storage and Micro SD cards. It's confirmed to work on various Nexus devices but we may have to make some changes on other devices to keep Windows happy. Windows is very picky about USB IDs and its drivers. We have tested it on Windows 7 and 8 as well as Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty. MTP is enabled by default, but we do toggle it off and on automatically during certain operations such as if you choose to wipe a storage partition. You can enable or disable MTP under the mount menu in TWRP. For more about what MTP is here.

Note: Due to a weird bug with our MTP setup, you cannot copy a zip file to the root of storage with Windows. You can change the .zip to something else like .txt and then copy it to the root and rename the file back to .zip once it's copied to the device. You can also copy the zip into any subfolder.

Command line support is also now available. You can perform various OpenRecoveryScript commands via the adb shell. Depending on what you are doing you may wish to do a "twrp set tw_mtp_enabled 0" and then reboot to prevent the MTP auto toggle from killing your adb interface. You can use this option to create and restore backups, wipe, install zips, and more. Via adb shell, type twrp followed by a space then enter the OpenRecoveryScript command and hit enter. -Add GUI option to change or repair file systems on individual partitions. The change is destructive so backup your data including internal sdcard first. This option should make it a little easier to migrate a device from ext4 -> f2fs, for instance. You will find this option under Wipe -> Advanced Wipe, then select only one partition and then press the Repair or Change File System button. If a developer has added f2fs support for your device and we don't have it in TWRP, please contact me via PM to arrange for it to be added.

-Added a class to search for files to make finding the correct brightness file automatic in most cases

Most devices can be updated quickly and easily with the TWRP Manager app:

2) Open TWRP Manager and provide root permissions
3) Hit Advanced->Install Recovery
4) Verify the correct device name on your screen then press Install Recovery if the correct device is showing

Load up Odin
Click PDA and load in the TWRP tar you downloaded
Ensure you have Samsung drivers installed
Power off your device
Press and hold Power + Volume Down + Home
At the confirmation screen press Volume up
Once you've entered download mode connect your device
Confirm you see a blue/yellow box in Odin with a com#
Click start
When it says finished, rebooting press and hold Volume up and Power to enter recovery

So the source Samsung had posted one of them wouldn't download the 3 times i tried and the other had a corrupted readme.txt, luckily the design was similar with other snapdragon 400 Samsung's and I figured the defconfigs out. I couldn't use the prebuilt kernel because it was too large and had Samsung's anti rooting stuff. here is the defconfig i used so anyone can take it and make the same kernel i did easily.

Idk if this is just me, but when I try and go into recovery I do the steps and I feel two vibrations, then it just boots into the phone. Not into recovery. Maybe I am doing something wrong?

just make sure you pick the correct resolution. For the avant that would be 540×960.

This worked Thank you! I derped big time on that xD. Anyways, to be more on topic, what does this mean now? Will we be seeing a ROM soon? (Assuming unlocking the bootloader is not a problem?)

You flashed a custom recovery and flashed a custom recovery to root, you never had a locked bootloader.

a recovery means people can start flashing zips and being more brave with their phones. i have no idea on a rom or anything, i hold no personal stake in the device. i merely ported recovery because masterchief asked me to.=, i dont have this phone or tmobile/metro service so i dont plan on buying it to work on it more .

Well thank you to you both! I'm glad to see some life FINALLY being put into this phone. I don't really pay much for a phone (this is honestly the most expensive phone I bought lol) and you finally made the phone worth the price. Thank you for that! Hopefully someone makes a custom rom for it soon

Wow, it's great to see the Avant finally get the love it deserves! Thanks a million, I can't wait to try it! One little thing, though:
I downloaded the .tar file for TWRP, and before flashing it, I checked the MD5 sum, and no matter how many times I download it, or what device I download it from, the MD5 I get is ec10dbc624dc6f97c33f135eac3b9c65, whereas your site says it's aecfa73caa3b5f19ba6610587fe181e7. I was just wondering if this file is still safe to flash, or if maybe something happened on your end, Shabbypenguin, or if my internet connection is just tripping out.

The only thing I've noticed is that sometimes it only takes a few seconds for twrp to load and sometimes it takes minutes. It usually loads within 30 seconds but there were two times that it took 2 or 3 minutes. It still works perfectly once it boots up and Even if this is the final release I am thankful.

I would love to fix that, but i wouldnt have the slightest idea of what would be causing that. i would need recovery logs of it booting regularly and when its "delayed" to even see if its something that could be fixed.

Well if you don't mind trying I'll collect some logs and keep em organized by how long it took to boot into recovery. If I get something good I'll let u know. You are talking about cache/recovery/last log right?

Subject: Cannot find Recovery in TWRP Manager

Hi, thanks first to Shabbypenguin, I have been following your posts on XDA also. Great contribution!

I downloaded the TWRP manager from Play Store, installed it. (BTW, I have BusyBox Pro installed also).

When I run TWRP Manager, all seem fine. Then I select "Install TWRP", under "Device Name", I couldn't find Galaxy Avant.

Did I miss anything? Or should I use Odin on a PC to install TWRP Recovery to Avant?

This isnt a officially supported device, the first post is the template for TWRP, i altered it to say look in post #2 to try and help stem any confusion, apologies it didnt help you though.
