Root Unlock before rooting?

Do you have to unlock the bootloader before you can root the DNA? I had the Droid Bionic before and it was so easy to root and flash roms on it, the DNA is a different story, though id really like to root it. Unlocking the bootloader seems kind of complicated and i dont want to take the risk of bricking my phone.

I'm not familiar with the dna root process, but if it involves unlocking via HTCDev, then it actually is fairly simple by following instructions.

Just unlocking the boot loader, there is very very little chance of a brick.
