    Hi
I am just getting started with Nexus S. I bought it unlocked at best buy in the United States.
I turned it on for the first time and could access all icons at bottom; did not choose any
wireless network and did not log into gmail. Installed usb drivers
from android (to develop android apps) and shut phone off.

Second time I turned on phone, could not access anything. Here is
    what happened:
Turned on: says google, then colors, then screen:
    says No SIM card
    shows date and time
says "Please insert a SIM card"
Shows only two icons that I could press:
first is symbol of a lock that is unlocked (green background)
second is symbol of what looks like a card (yellow background)
Cannot access icons at bottom of screen
I got a SIM card from TMobile but I do not think I should use it since
I do not want to make phone calls nor pay for TMobile.

    What should I do?
    Thanks,
    taffy

    Hello Taffy,

What you're experiencing is normal, at least I get the same thing.

When you turn on the phone and get to the two icons simply put your finger on the green unlock icon and slide it to the right. This will unlock the phone and get you to the other features. If you only press the green unlock icon it won't do anything.

    Have a terrific weekend!
    Robert
