Hi everyone, im from over on the Captivate forum. I have been keeping an eye on this phone for the.last few weeks. I like the Captivate but it has a few drawbacks that to me are a real pain. Mainly the STILL malfunctioning GPS, the inability to use bluetooth controlers, lack of camera flash, lack of FFC, and a real keyboard would be.nice.

So my first question is, how happy are you all with you phones overall? Quality, functions, thickness, Z hinge? Etc.

Second thing, does anyone know much about unlocking this phone, is it.difficult? How about functions? Do any of the functions "break" when you unlock them? I would be using it on ATT, which i believe is pretty much the same type of network.

If it isnt to difficult to unlock, it functions proppery after unlock i would like to buy one off contract and try it out. If i like it better than the captivate, i reset the Cap. Unlock it and ebay it for 450 ish with all the extras i have and end up breaking even money wise and end up with a phone that suits me better. If i decide i like the capt better, unlocked G2s are ebaying for about 600+.

    Thanks.for any info and feedback!

I write about technology for Maximum PC and Tested
    in the Transcend
It's a fine phone, but even if there is a reliable unlock, it won't work properly on AT&T. Both they and Tmo are GSM, but you will only get 2G Edge data with a G2 on AT&T. The 3G frequencies are just different.

I have it unlocked for AT&T. I used my friends account and called T-mobile to get the unlock code. It took a day to email the code. I'm in wifi areas most the time. I love the phone.

Cool, so once unlocked it only runs 2g (edge)? Not a big deal for me either. I use wifi most places i go and dont use much data while mobile (\just email, widget and twitter updates.

How is the GPS on these things? ( A big problem for galaxy S phones)

How about bluetooth goodies, specifically controles like keyboards, mice, game pads. (Galaxy S phones use a proprietary bluetooth system that makes them incompatible with many Bluetooth HIDs)

How is over speed, any UI lag, app lag, media playback stutter?

How is everyone liking the keyboard and Z hinge thing?

How about the display color, brightness, clarity? (I have to give it to samsung that these SAMOLEDs are sweet!)

I've messed with the dummy model at the store but since its just a dummy you dont get a real idea of the screen and UI.

Oh, and Im guessing would would not get OTA updates since you aren't on their network? So i'm guessing it would be a manual flash.. no biggie either.

I would also love to know how the bluetooth control is. For example, can you skip tracks, play and pause from a bluetooth headset?

FWIW I looked at completed auctions, and found G2 new unlocked are fetching about $475 or so. If you are contract -averse, then this is a better deal than buying the phone with a contract for, say $150 or $200. If you are on a good plan with data, 24 months of use will be recovered through the savings over a contracted phone.

Hello, so far I love the phone, I managed to unlock it through IMEI code, at gsmunlockstore.com I called then, 21$ Is the cost for the unlocking code, very easy to do it, just put the non Tmo sim card, turn phone on, u put the unlock code an voila, there, phone reboots, and it grabs the other carrier's signal.

My only problem so far is that I cannot use the 2G network, even configuring the APN of my current carrier (digitel venezuela), I'm able to call and all that, just not any data plans. I have to get this sorted out, meanwhile I use wifi to download apps, log into facebook, emails and such

I've never had to 'unlock' a phone before when travelling overseas as when I had the iPhone I would just get international data packages.

I'm planning on going down to Guatemala in a few months and want to be able to use the G2 while I'm down there. So if I want to avoid all of the T-Mobile international charges do I have to first unlock to phone in order to stick another carrier's SIM card in it?

    Thanks.

Yes, but do not pay for unlocking. Call TMobi tech support and they will give you a code for free.
