Unpredictable Android and/or SAMSUNG Galaxy Express 3 AT&T GoPhone

So, out of the blue, my SAMSUNG Galaxy Express 3 AT&T GoPhone won't update any apps unless I have over 500 MBytes free. Even if the TOTAL space of the app AND its data, according to Application manager, is only 8 GBytes. I have like 455 MBytes free. I could go on with other examples. Why? It was not like this just a few weeks ago. This phone and whatever tailoring AT&T did to the OS stinks and has from the beginning when I got this phone last August with stupid, nonsensical storage issues. Android 6.0.1
