??? - are you sure you have got the correct ROM version for your device (i.e. T-Mobile, Orange, Generic HTC)?
If it's an update.zip then it must be a cooked ROM, so there's no correct version.
@brazzO: the update.zip might be corrupt, so try redownloading it, copy the file to your SD card, and then reapply.
If the above doesn't work, post back with details of your current ROM build, which ROM you're attempting to install, and which recovery image you're using to do the update.
Go to Settings-About phone and post the Build number, please.
Is that v2.7 of the MoDaCo custom ROM?
Is this installed (flashed) on the handset or fastbooted via PC?

Yes, i don't know if there is any better out there at the moment, as i say, i have only recently got my HTC HERO & have been trying every day to figure it out but still nothing works.

That's the initial T-Mobile release ROM.... I don't think that should be a problem.
There are more recent versions, but v2.7 is a good solid one. I'm happy enough right now with v2.8, myself.
If you can reboot into the recovery image then you've done it correctly.
You select "Apply sdcard:update zip" and it finds the file but fails with a "No signature" error? Weird..... maybe d/l v2.8 and try it instead?
I'm off to work shortly but will have a think (and maybe a trawl of the MoDaCo forum if time permits) to see if a problem exists that I'm unaware of.

Update : I got it working, i redone every step & somewhere i was going wrong.
The 2.7 ROM is installed to my phone and it runs so much smoother.
