Ok this is a dumb question, I got a cheapo off brand chinese tablet running on Froyo, which the build in system update seems to be disabled, it keep saying it is up today, but I saw the same device with different brand name running on Gingerbread, so my question is how do I update mine, as I am sure I can get no support at all from the supplier. I don't want to root it yet, until I know a bit more about the OS, thanks for your help !

Different brands may update quicker than yours. Plus the user could have been rooted and installed a custom rom.

    You answered your own question.

EKI and Grandmars are two it use I know of, this kind of tablet will never get updated officially, I just thought there may be a 'generic' image that fit all devices with similar spec., I know it can't be upgraded to Honeycomb due to the h/w requirement, and I won't do this to my HTC it is too risky..

The shop did not install custom rom, it is an officially release model in a different brand

Nope. ROM's are device-specific. Hardware can vary even with similar specs. You'd need to find one for your device.
