So I got my N1 yesterday and am so far loving it. It's everything I hoped my G1 to be. Not that I didn't like my G1, but after 15 months it was starting to show its age.

Anyways, I figured there probably needs to be a discussion on how we will get updates for our N1. Let's face it, the N1 is different from every other Android phone on the market now in that, it's not really supported by a carrier. Sure, T-Mob is the starting carrier for official support, but really this is Google's baby.

So while the G1 and MyTouch are often graced with updates OTA via T-Mob, I probably wouldn't expect the same treatment for the H1, especially since the phone isn't even branded with them.

So does this mean we can expect updates over the web? From Google? Perhaps the Google.com/phone website...

Or does it fall to HTC to supply the updates?

If it's the latter I think we may be in trouble. HTC still hasn't updated many of their Sense UI phones and if they don't go the distance for their own skinned OS why would they go the distance for a phone that's just being made by them.

Anyways, does anybody have any thoughts or perhaps knowledge of where we might be getting future firmware and software updates?

In another thread, someone wrote to HTC and it sounded like HTC would release updates OTA or on their website.

Just noticed that in the Settings under "About Phone" at the very top there is a option called: System Updates and underneath it says "Check for system updates."

I wonder if this will allow for firmware updates, etc. and if we'll be able to get the updates at our leisure instead of waiting for an OTA.

That doesnt work like that. Thats only for the case where you will get an OTA update, select 'Not later' and then go back to update later. It should be listed there. It wont go fetch updates like youre thinking.

I think I very well could be WRONG, but I've had the phone for about 3 weeks now. I've gotten 2 updates, and one was given to me while they were releasing the phone to press. When I got it, they both were named "Google Holiday Update 1 & 2". This made me believe it was coming from Google.

So....that's probably where they may be coming from. Also, when I got it, I got a little pop-up window that prompted me to download the update.

I think the phone will check a certain ling from google to check for updates and will promt us that there are some available. It would be the same way and the most logical. It's like with Windows, it doesn't matter what your Broadband or Internetprovider is, you'll get the updates from an certain Inet address. Google will be responsible for updates as it is their phone, HTC just build it.

The updates 3rd got probably brought his phone to what it was shipped with, since he had it before public release. There was also talk of a Jan 11th update for the radio fix, but thats obivously not happened. Current is what is running on your phone. If there is an update out there, your phone will fetch it an let you know.
