I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the Android 2.2 can be installed on the EVO, but will remove the HTC sense UI, any info on that.

I think when 2.2 comes out you can do this, not sure about the UI. When will this be released?

Since I just logged off work, I'm looking into it now. You're basically getting root access to your phone, and flashing froyo to it. Kinda like reformatting from vista to windows 7.

    sorry just to add

because it's a fresh install, there wont be sense on it - as it's not installed in the new version.

Hope that makes sense (pun intended) :)

Other than "clearing defaults" within applications for HTC Sense and using the Android Launcher as the default, I seriously doubt HTC will strip the 2.2 Froyo update of the Sense UI. Their marketing strategy is about the Sense UI which sets them apart from other Android devices.

What exactly is SENSE UI, is it better than plain touchscreen? I have the HTC Imagio with windows 6.5 now with Verizon (thinking of switching)

It makes the use of Android more aesthetically pleasing. Cleaner, crisper, all around better looking.

Not really. I was rooted with CM6 froyo rom and it was a little faster but not much.. 2.1 rom on the evo scores a 5-6.9 on the limpak score. 2.2 on the evo scores 38-45ish.

Nevermind i googled it. I think it was a valid question.

That seems like a large improvement, although i dont know how limpak translates to my use.

Sense is the program that gives you the dock at the bottom of your screen (app drawer, phone button, add widget button) as well as your 7 home screens. In addition, there are Sense-specific widgets that only work with Sense. Examples of this are the clock/calendar widget on your central home screen, the off/on toggles for your radios, etc. All of this together is referred to as the Sense UI.

It's hard to tell what's part of Sense and what isn't. If you ever decide to use a different home/launcher app (which is the type of app that Sense is), you'll have a better idea of what is Sense and what isn't.

2.2 is right around the corner. I believe client initialized download this weekend and a push roll out starting on the 3rd. No need for custom ROMs.
