My unlocked T-Mobile Desire is running Android 2.1. Is it possible to manually upgrade it to 2.2 or 2.3 without rooting it? Can anyone point me to a downloadable file? What data/settings will I lose when I upgrade if any? Thanks!

you cant do anything without root accept the standard OTA updates through HTC. There should be a standard 2.2 update available just sync it and see

check - Settings / about phone / system software updates. Click check now and you should see if one is available. Just make sure you have plenty of charge it have it plugged in, and also some free mb. Can't remember how much - just delete all non essential free stuff you can download again. Your phone will tell you if there is not enough space.

You need at least 25MB free on the "internal storage". You should be connected to WiFi to check and download OTA updates.

Is it possible to download the update OTA given that my phone is unlocked and debranded? When I first got my phone and debranded it, I was advised to install updates manually for some reason. I want the standard HTC version of 2.2 so I don't need rooting.

Don't see why not - yours sounds the same as mine. Just follow the advice above (including being on WiFi)

The last unbranded update 2.29.405.5 didnt work OTA for debranded handsets for some reason.

It depends what update it gives you. All others are fine.
