So I'm thinking about upgrading for this bad boy (although I might hold out for news about the "prime"). Anyway, i have an OG droid w/ unlimited data right now and I know my plan is grandfathered in, but the one thing I've never been clear on is whether or not 4G LTE is considered a separate plan.

Do the unlimited Data plans differentiate between 3g and 4g? If I got the Bionic would I have unlimited 4G automatically per my grandfathered unlimited plan? Thanks in advance for any replies.

yes. you have an "unlimited data plan" not an "unlimited 3g" plan. If you have unlimited now, you will have unlimited 3g/4g if its available in your area.

Good to know, thanks. I must say, that is a pretty good incentive to stay on Verizon for another 2 years, regardless of what phone I end up with. My contract expires at the end of November so I have a little time to wait and see what's around the bend, but unlimited, blazing fast 4G with Verizon's coverage is pretty tempting.

Actually, just thought of another question. Our plan includes me and my wife. Her Droid is pretty much falling apart at this point and she's less picky about what phone she has, so if I got her the Bionic and held out for the Prime myself, how would that work? Would her line alone be extended for 2 more years and then mine would remain on my current contract until I upgrade or would it extend our whole plan as 1 contract?

Yes, that's the way it works. Each phone has it's own upgrade date. Check her upgrade date and if she can upgrade, go ahead and use it. Your upgrade for your own line will remain untouched and you can use it whenever. You don't have to upgrade both phones at the same time.
