On the HTC website there is a download available to update my software to Android 2.3, my phone has 2.2.2 version and when I click for software update on my phone it tells me none are available. Is it worth downloading this off the site or wait till my phone can do it?? What are the benefits etc.
    Here is the link

HTCdev - HTC Kernel Source Code and Binaries

Your comments and thoughts are much appreciated as I'm a newbie to all this.

    Thanks in advance.

You won't get 2.3 over the air, installing it from the HTCdev is the only way. It'll wipe all your data but when I did it, it did seem a quite a bit faster and a the graphics were changed and improved in some areas. If your willing to restore all your data then go for it but if your not then its probably not worth it. Have a look here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.3-highlights.html for a list of changes

    Thanks for that ;)

    What data will I lose?

I have just put in another sd card, I did back my data on my computer and then copied it all to my new sd card, can I just do this again instead of doing it manually?

    Thanks.

Anything on your SD card will be fine. EVERYTHING on your phone will be wiped.
So you will want to back up apps, contacts, sms etc first.
Here an app that will back up your apps to your sd card:https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.infolife.appbackup&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm1vYmkuaW5mb2xpZmUuYXBwYmFja3VwIl0 It wont back up any data from the apps however (just the .apk). So for example if you have done 30 levels on angry birds this wont be backed up. If you decide to upgrade to 2.3 then when you restore the apps they will be like they would if you just downloaded them from the market (totally stock).
To back up contacts export them to your sd card.
SMS back up can be done with a market app.
