Phillip Seaton says his penis was removed during what was supposed to have been a circumcision to treat inflammation four years ago.
Dr John Patterson says he amputated because he found life-threatening cancer during the operation.

I understand. At first, I thought the doc made a mistake, but he gave the doc permission. I'm wondering should the doc had asked first. That's a serious decision for the doc to make, without talking with the guy first.

I haven't yet read the article. I can say this, though. It is too common for patients to go into surgery not understanding the many possibilities that can happen in OR. Doctors and the nurses involved pre-op are obligated to explain possibilities and to answer questions the patient and/or his or her representatives (family, etc) have.

In emergency situations, this is almost impossible. But in elective surgery, it's required.

They too often just rush the issue, and then the patient gets an ugly, hard to understand/deal with surprise in the recovery area.
