USB Jigs on eBay

I've been contemplating rooting and possibly trying Villain/Lite'ning ROM and worried in case I cock up and brick my GS2, as I am only 1 month into a 2 year Orange contract.

They all say that it will:
1. get the phone back into download mode
2. reset the rom counter back to zero
3. remove the "yellow triangle"? (not 100% sure on what this is exactly)

So, I was wondering, do these actually work and do all of the above?

What happens if you plug one of these jigs into a normal working GS2? Will it do anything? Will it harm/reset anything?

Yes the Jigs work but you dont really need one unless you want to reset the rom counter. You can do the rest without it.

So if a brick my phone, how would I get it into download mode?
This is what I initially thought the point of these jigs were.

Thats how I installed KH3.

So when is a handset actually bricked then? I thought a bricked handset was unable to go into download mode at all.

Download mode is a separate part to the phone. When you flash firmware, kernels, or modems you are only changing a certain part of the phone and that doesnt touch the download mode. So if you cant boot the phone you can always boot into download mode. The only way to brick the phone permanently would be to some how try and flash the download mode.

All the jigs are advertised as being able to get around a bricked phone, but this seems not to be true?

My guess is that the partition table was overwritten incorrectly. One bit of advice posted repeatedly on firmware installation guides is, "Don't use a .PIT file unless specifically instructed to do so". I've yet to see such an instruction.

Yeah they make some interesting claims, but they don't work.

How exactly do you brick a Galaxy S II anyway?
