If I have a phone with 2 dual-standby sim slots, do I need to "populate" both slots?

    No

(you can use zero, one or 2 sims.... but obviously your calling options will be different depending on what sims you put in)

Correct. Right now I have a dal sim phone with no sims that I'm using for streaming music via WiFi and a dual sim with only one sim that I use as my regular mobile phone.

Thanks for the quick replies! That's good news. I got a good deal on a Blue Studio X unlocked, but I only have one (prepaid) carrier and I only want to use one SIM. I was sure it would run with no SIM cards (WiFi), but I had some concerns. I want to keep slot 2 (I guess) empty for travel or a second service.
