I'm writing this post from the Atrix's dock using the bluetooth keyboard right now and seeing androidforums.com in the full Firefox browser.

I'm using wifi as I don't have a tethering plan.

The dock/webtop/keyboard/mouse work great and are really very cool. The highest resolution that seems to be supported is 1280x1024, which is pretty good.

I was messing around and found that you can check out the webtop Linux's filesystem in Firefox by going to the URL "file:///".

This lets me see some cool things like the output of /proc/cpuinfo:

    Processor : ARMv7 Processor rev 0 (v7l)
    processor : 0
    BogoMIPS : 1992.29

    processor : 1

(the above is a copy/paste directly from one Firefox webtop tab into this one where I'm composing this post).

Certain filetypes have been blocked so as not to let me get into them in Firefox to look at them.

One thing that is cool is that gcc (the Linux C compiler) is actually installed in the Linux running the webtop (found in /usr/bin/gcc). So, if/when full access gets hacked in to the webtop Linux, it should be possible to compile other applications other than Firefox to run on the webtop without having to try to get a compiler onto it.

would you say its worth the $180? I am very tempted to get this or the Laptop dock. Do you think webtop would have a good place for a student like me? I know i can get a netbook for the same price. But I really like having the phone functionality and I also like the feel of the laptop dock.

For me it is worth the $180, but it is still overpriced for what you get. When I say it is "worth" it to me, I mean that I don't mind paying that. Others might feel differently. I don't find it useful enough that I would pay for the laptop dock right now.

Should you get it as a student? Well, do you have a laptop now? Can you live doing nothing with that laptop but using a web browser? No Word, no Excel, no Notepad, no specialized applications for your major. If the answer is yes, then this might work for you.

For me, I could afford it, already have a good laptop, and didn't mind spending $180 just to have a cool new toy to play with. If I didn't have a laptop, I wouldn't consider this an alternative. I'm having fun playing with this, but honestly, I'll still use my laptop more just given what I need to do.

I'm having issues with my HD dock. I don't have the "Webtop" option when I dock it and everything is plugged in correctly. The only options appearing on my phone is "Entertainment Center" and "Do nothing". Did the "Webtop" option automatically appear on your phone when docked?

Make sure you have the Atrix full seated in the dock, This happened to me when I put my Atrix in the laptop dock but did not fully seat it.

You have to have power plugged into the dock. Check that, and make sure you have the power cord plugged into the small hole which is for it, not the bigger hole which I think is for an audio out.

Given cloud based apps and suites including virtual desktops, office 365, chrome OS, terminal servers, and so on this may very well be the first step away from smart phones and into personal gateway devices (For lack of a better term).

Granted some of these apps require IE right now but who knows...
