When you go buy the phone:
Just ask them to take you to a dark room (Bathroom with lights off is usually the most feasible) and go into the secret menu. Run the test. That'll give you the exact quality of what to expect before you even leave.

SVC Menu > LCD Test > Automatic or manual test is fine but if you've got screen turn off at 30 seconds or less it'll turn off before it's done. I recommend the manual mode. Click the screen three times until you get to the gray screen that lightens with each tap. That will reveal any issues.
