Vanishing photos after moving them

Just got my new Samsung A40. I took some pictures & moved them from the DCIM directory in the phone memory to another directory in the SD card. Phone says it has moved them. If I look in the new directory it shows the moved photos as grey rectangles with an exclamation mark in the middle. If I scroll down the display till the grey photos are out of sight then scroll up again, the picture thumbnails appear. However, if I try to open the photos full screen, I just get the grey rectangles with an exclamation mark in the middle full screen. Tapping "Details" gives the basic photo data - date, size, path & title. I tried plugging in the phone into the computer to download them, but they are nowhere to be found. I tried "Sharing" the photos, but it says "Unsupported file". If I try to copy them, it says "can't copy".

I won't be moving any more photos in the phone till I discover the cause.

    Help please. John

Too many variables to answer your question.
It looks like they all got corrupted in the move process.
Rule of thumb is to copy, never move files, as this is what can happen...
Do you use Google photos by chance?

Sounds like you might have a duff or fake SD card and it corrupted the pics. If it's a new SD, check its integrity. Where did you buy it?

Card is a Fujifilm 9181AA 16GB 07DS2. I had it in my old S3 Mini for some years where it worked fine. For a time, in the new phone, it wouldn't copy, delete or anything, though I could read the contents. I contacted Samsung who asked for details. In the process of checking the card make & number, I had to turn off the phone & remove the card. After it was all reconnected & back on again, everything worked fine - for a time. Now I can't change the card contents again. With old phone. I had a problem which turned out to be caused by a faulty SD card. I'm beginning to think a new card now could solve this problem.

I don't use Goggle Photos. I tend to avoid anything that involves sending my data out into the world: I prefer to keep everything in-house.

Thank you for the advice. John

Have you got any way way to plug the sd card directly into your pc? Some PC's have a slot but most don't so you might need an adapter or something. I'd try copying everything on the sd card to your pc and then reformat the card in your phone. If you can't copy everything don't format just yet though as you'll lose everything.

I've ordered a new 32GB card. When that's filled & fitted, I'll try the re-format & see if that helps. I can always keep it as a spare. It came with a standard SD card adaptor. Thanks all.
