Velocity 1.0 dropping jaws at local verizon store

I just had to share a little in-store experience with my fellow Velocity users: I was in my local verizon store today to order a new battery (original crapped out) and was met with mixed reactions as the guy behind the counter saw the shimmering "VELOCITY" boot animation instead of ANDROID.

He first asked if I hacked the phone, to which I replied no (I consider hacking to be a modification of something to perform a completely different function than its original/intended function... not simply making it run to its full potential)
He then walked me over to the display area where all the phones are, more specifically their display model Ally. He rebooted their display and mine side by side and when the velocity screen showed up he said "See, your phone is hacked because ours doesn't do that, its supposed to say android", and I said "No, it's rooted with a custom ROM and theme."

By this time a small crowd of customers had gathered near me along with employees who were showing off the phones. One of the customers turned to ask me "why would you do that to your phone?", and I simply said "Because its functionality and appearance are far superior to what it could ever be out of the box." Not only was the customer intrigued, but the guy who was originally helping me was scrolling through the phone basically taking it for a test drive, uttering things like "wow" and "that's different", obviously playing with it... with a huge smile on his face.

A few of the customers had leaned over to take a look at my phone which was conveniently displayed right next to a stock Ally, and took immediate notice of the sexy UI. I began telling them about over/downclocking in favor of performance and battery life, as well as things like tether and bloatware removal. This attracted the attention of another sales person who began "over-the-shoulder" analysis with the other guy of my phone vs. the stock one. This went on for about five minutes before the original person who helped me had to get back to work, and the people who were oo-ing and aah-ing at my phone to go back to shopping.

I considered it a victory for us root/rom users. Not only did the phone gurus at verizon jock on it, but I overheard a few of the customers saying things like "why doesn't it just come like that?" and "that one looked so much cooler", not to mention it probably opened a few eyes to the true potential of our phones... not just the Ally but android phones in general. So not only did I make it known that verizon is not the master of all things android, but I also got my battery replaced :)

Just thought I would share this with everyone, plus I'm sure it's music to the ears of the dev's... keep up the good work, everybody is impressed.

What you just did was screw yourself, he most likely went over and set void warranty on your phone...as thats what you did by doing these mods, voided your warranty...

Potentially, however, you don't need to give out any of your personal or account information to buy a battery. Unless he like really made an effort to access his account and mark it void then i think he's in the clear, or at least I hope he is! Ballsy though, that's like bringing cocaine into the police dept., it's all good until you get caught!

Of course if you ever need the warranty as long as you can get it back to any version of stock Rom you can just say what mods? it was ADW Launcher and a theme, just sayin...

The verizon guy jocked on your phone!? LoL! That sounds like something Soulja Boy would say.

    That's what I'm saying.

I doubt there is a "Flag Warranty" anywhere on VZW's system. And, if there is, you've gotta get them to prove it (Which they don't try hard. They just send the unit off to the manufacturer, who then tells them).

It also helps if you're friendly with your VZW store reps :) My friend is a manager at one, and loves it when I come in and show off gadgets and people are there. I show them what you can REALLY do, which in turn drives sales.

I highly doubt that verizon has a "void warranty" note in their system unless you actually brought them a modified phone and said "replace this it doesn't work", and actually made a warranty claim then I think you would have some issues.

Plus if push comes to shove i'll just flash back to stock, backup/wipe my SD card, and eagerly ask them to prove to me that my phone is/was ever modified.

They do, but as stated youd have to give them your account info for them to be able to. I was just stating your ballsy

The only thing I see wrong with this, is mentioning tethering.
I know AT&T used to start charging for mobile wifi (or end service) when they found out people were jailbreaking the iPhones for that purpose.

Yeah, if you can weed through the crap and get a legit battery. Wouldn't use anything that's not authentic LG. Too much work on eBay to get the right batter...IMO.

I purchased a couple....they are the LG OEM units. The same that came with the Ally. You do have to check with the vendor on Ebay because they do sell both the good and the bad.

well thats bc when they go check and see if they can jus force the original software to flash which i would belive is 2.1 in most verizon stores even tho 2.2 is out for bout 3 weeks
but if they are unable to flash the software they will consider it a "fried" ally meaning they will overnight u a new one and expect u to ship off the broken one and exam it in their factorys or whatever
i think onlyif you show them the physical changes will they ever notice bc wth the software they have no proof of root permissions but only a change in the build but even then its hard to discover on a bricked ally
but your garunteed to have a explinationready for why ur phone broke and my favorite reason ive heard so far was that "i rolled off the couch and fell on it"
no screen damage but wouldnt boot for shit
