How is verizon able to get away with tacking on $30 extra on top of the data plan for unlimited email & web browsing?

If I cancel this will they block http & smtp from my phone when on the network? I assume I'd be good with wi-fi.

Would they block widgets and other apps that use http protocol?

Can the web browser be set up to use a proxy?

I don't think they will block anything - they will charge you per mb
used up or down, which is the default option on their plans.

I think the 29.99 is total added to your monthly bill (not including tax etc of course) for having the "smartphone". the email/web/data is all the same 30 dollar plan/bundle. Isn't it?

    They're not.

The $30 is for unlimited data, it's not on top of the data plan.

I'm a bit confused. The $30 isn't an extra charge on top of the data plan. It is the data plan. Your calling package doesn't include data usage at all.

You will have a voice plan (may or may not have texting) and a data plan. Only one $30 data plan per line. You will not be able to drop that data plan so long as a smartphone is attached to that line. Verizon has changed their system to not allow that (any smartphone/blackberry).

This is correct, as several other posters have mentioned. The $30 is the "Smartphone Unlimited Data Plan". It covers your e-mail, web, etc; whatever uses data. There is no additional $30 on top of this, it already covers all of the things you need and is added on to a regular plan when a Smartphone is activated. If you have been told otherwise, I would go speak to a Verizon rep as you have either been misinformed or lied to.

I'm actually more annoyed with the the couple bucks of 'VZW surcharges' they tack on, AKA "an unspecified amount of money we charge you for vague and nebulous reasons"

Ya. the funny thing is that they call it an "Unlimited Data Plan" when in fact you are allowed up to 5GB and surcharged there after. Is it possible to exceed that within a month? 5GB = 5,000,000,000kb

They require a data plan with this phone so I doubt you can just cancel that portion of it.

I do stream Slacker and I never get close to the limit.

Yes, the Droid is new but I used Slacker on my Storm before I traded for the Droid. :)

Was just taking a guess. I got close when I was on AT&T. I streamed it just about every day.

its just like it was with blackberrys. If you had a blackberry there was a 30 buck a month BB plan which was unlimited data (email, browsing, etc.) This was ontop of your voice plan. So basically the 30 buck data plan for the droid is the samething you would have if you had a blackberry phone. Doesn't include a text plan.

so in short for instance my bill is something like this

xxx dollars a month for calling minutes
    30.00 for data plan
    xxx dollars for text plan
    xxx dollars for insurance

You should only have one data plan and thats the 30.00 unlimited data plan

Multiple VZ reps have explicitly told me that the 5gb cap is only in regards to tethering. They said that the $30 plan is unlimited data from your mobile.

You're confused; they don't tack on $30 on top of the Data Plan.

And no, you cannot use the Connect or Premiere Plans with a smart phone.

And to clear it up further(i hope)

If you are on a family plan who uses the premier, they change your line(if you are not primary) to a 10 dollar line, instead of 30, so you are paying 40 for your line.(10 for minutes, 30 for unlimited data on a smart phone, etc).

ok I am wrong. Attached is what confused me. It's a screen shot from my features page. I mistakenly thought everything on this list was in my plan.

The unlimited data option available IS for tethering.

    Sorry,

Also the two options in you image are a one or the other deal.
