[Verizon] Does unlocking/rootting wipe the entire device or just the SD part?

I am a total noob. I figured I'd get the device setup and running more or less stably before adding the root variable into the mix. If I unlock the bootloader / root now, is it going to reverse all my work up to this point?

so any customized widgets and apps and everything will be gone?

Yes, you will have to re-customize them. However after you unlock the phone it will be just the exact same as when you first got it, so all of your market apps will start to download. You will just need to set up your preferences and screens again.

This is why it is advisable to unlock and root early on before you get everything the way you want it. I can tell you though it is worth it, plus lets be honest having to set everything back up just gives you another excuse to play with the precious more... :)

I did not hear that advisory before. That would be a good warning to put in the main gnex forum.

I am honestly very torn at this point whether to root or not. It already seemed like a lot of work, and now it's just gonna be more work. I mostly want to flash the radio drivers. But lots of people saying they don't even help.

I will be honest with you, on this phone you probably don't need to. I rooted because I do it to all of my phones. If you want to just do it for the radio drivers I would say just wait. Since this is a Nexus device we will be getting our updates straight from Google 4.0.3 is supposed to be pushed in about 2 weeks.

I will say though, this is the easiest phone I have ever rooted... Every single other one has had to use an exploit to get root, this is cake compared to that. :)
